Well I have good news and bad news.

Good news is that I jumped a 250 foot cliff in Twin Falls, ID which was my E jump. I now have a jump from a building, an antenna, a span and an “earth”. I can now apply for a base number, which is kind pf a tie to the timeline of the sport. I also made 28 jumps off the bridge there. Good practice. Very fun. Made new friends. Awesome.

The bad news is that a guy I had met previously. A VERY experienced base jumper with over 1000 jumps had a malfunction and died at the bridge while I was there. Fortunately I was packing at the top and didn’t have to witness it. The cause of the accident is still unknown. James “pete” Certain. It’s very rare for me to comment on someone I had only known so breifly, so that should make this statement really ring true, in that in the 5 days I knew him and jumped with him he made me feel like I had been his friend for a long time. RIP 683

Ughh that’s awful. Sorry for the loss.

Your nuts man!

Ugh, that friggen sucks. Sorry dude. :frowning:

Ya that def fn sucks. :frowning: Sorry to hear.

What number might you be?

Dan

You knew it was only a matter of time in this sport :frowning:

WOW, sorry to hear. :frowning:

I’ll probably be somewhere around 1500-1600

And pics / video of the earth jump?

I have a helmet video but honestly it’s not very interesting. It was fairly low (250 ft) so I took a PCA… I have a few pics of the exit point on my phone that I’ll post.

Sorry to hear. Definitely must be a wake up call for you.

Best wishes everything goes smooth in your jumps.

Being that this happened at a location I’m guessing was not legal to do. Did they brush this off and not fine you guys due to loosing a friend? Or did they come down on you guys even harder?

Here are a few pics from the exit point. The GPS coordinates are: 42.599989,-114.441883

This is what it looked like from the side. It looks low in this picture until you see me at the top of the cliff for reference. I am standing on the upper exit point that requires a running launch over the ledge below. It was a little technical so I climbed down to the lower exit point on the ledge below and went from there. Damn photobucket!

The location it’s at is legal for jumping year round. I jumped again less than an hour after.

Fixed. It was my fault. Didn’t realize it was caps sensitive.

Looking at the pictures I said to myself, “where’s the volcano?” A quick search shows you’re jumping off an old lava flow and / or caldera. Cool stuff (at least to me)

A lot of people think that just getting under canopy means that you’re safe:

Bad day for this dude. He escaped with 2 broken ankles and a concussion. He bounced.

watching that, I was like wtf is going to go wrong, it’s there, it’s square, oh wait? wtf are you doing? BANG

Breaks down like this:
Unstowed
Went to full flight, even for a split second
Initiated turn in forward surge from unstowing
Spiraled in.

Had he unstowed directly to deep brakes and then went 50% right, he would have had a nice flat turn and a likely safe landing into the wind. Or could have just ran it out downwind.

It’s easy to get in the habbit of going to full glide though but it’s a bad habbit.
