Best way to secure a driver side mirror?

I recently purchased and installed an OEM replacement mirror for the Legacy but unfortunately it has a similar issue to what the old mirror the had.

The mirror vibrates on/with the motor at any rate of speed above 30mph.

The assembly on the car is solid, motor works fine, doesn’t seem to have too excessive play when parked (maybe a minor at best but nothing clearly lose), however it gets quite annoying at speed.

I’d like to figure out a good way to stop the vibration but still give it ability of minor adjustment of play when/if necessary.

At this point in time I’m thinking of using cloth like substance stuck in between housing and mirror or possibly a few strategic spots flexible adhesive to secure it in place.

Wanted to see if any one has ever come across a similar issue or has a better idea on fixing it?

Set it in position, and clear silicone caulk the glass to the housing. When it needs to be be adjusted, peel it off and try again.

My 98 legacy had the same issues, it was a pain in the ass.

make a clip that holds the inner mirror part to the outer shell.

or just wedge a piece of something in the gap and remove it when you adjust mirrors

if you can remove the mirror from housing add a support piece or two to back of mirror like a gusset. theres a weak point somewhere

Seems it’s a design flaw in the Legacys then, likely due to age. Likely some sort of small plastic clip in a motor housing that goes bad.

Both good advices, thanks!

fix the fucking engine miss or motor mount so it don’t vibrate.

:rofl

says the guy that loves the rumble of a giant overkill diesel motor :rofl

yup, welcome to the world of shitty subaru mirrors. go get yourself a pack of wood window wedges and jamb a few pieces in the mirror as suggested. paint them the color of the car with some rattle can if you want them to blend in a bit.

You can take the mirror apart and tighten the mechanism, but I’ve broken the tabs off more mirror glass that I can shake a stick at doing this.

Do what your brother did , rip it off backing out of park auto …

Wonder if you could set it in position. Carefully take it apart without moving it. Silicone the guts back there and put it back together.

I gave the old mirror I can take apart and investigate without messing with this one.

:lol @ slowmarro

Wayne - has nothing to do with engine mounts, these mirrors are fricken vortex generators at speed and the wind knocks it around.

Buy a new car

Remove mirrors for aerodynamics and gain MPGs!

hey,

diesels are allowed to rattle & shake like a MOFO
because they’re diesels.

I was just fucking around dude. I get ya, my mom used to have a legacy.

Well ended up using black shims, courtesy of Lowes and it worked out pretty well.

Sorry for crappy pic, but you can see one on the bottom, and the ones in the left side and top are basically invisible.

Also however decided to look into the old one and see why it had the same issue, seeing as it’s rather common in these Legacies.

Took the entire mirror apart and got down to the source of the problem.

As you can see part of the mount is missing entirely.

I’d debate on fixing it and putting it all back together into the housing, however I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with securing a mirror back on (needs to come off the double sided tape to get to interior housing) The double sided tape never held the mirror right and it would always fall off later on. Don’t want to solve one problem by creating another one.

panel bond the glass back on the mount. I dont have any parts to epoxy with it quite yet, but when i do ill PM you and I can do it.

The stuff is $30-50 a “tube”. Which is actually 2 side by side tubes and uses a $3 throwaway tip to self-mix the 2 materials. Annnnnd uses a special gun to dispense it.

Its used for mounting bed sides, sheet metal and plastic panels on cars, etc Think JB weld on crack.

And smells TERRIBLE, and will also create a fire in trash can if thrown away before fully curing :rofl

Shims came lose today.

May look into a fix as they don’t seem like a good long term solution.

Means I still have to recreate that bar that uses to go across with something.

Tooth sticks? Lol
