Bike Crew: Ducati Monster or Triumph Speed Four?

^^^^^^^^^Dooo ittt. i took one way back when i first started riding. Lisence expired. rode on a permit for like 2 years (re issued every season). Honestly i am thinking of taking it again as a refresher.

Don’t take the basics course, take one of the others.

Stuff I learned/tried in the basics course kept me out of the river once.

Lol, it’s apparent alot of the guys posting don’t know who the OP is. Sam is the most level headed dude I think I’ve ever met. I would have no problems letting Sam take my 10r after he learned the basics of riding.

I would trust sam w/ anything i owned.

either or, depending on your styling likes/dislikes. Other than that you’ll probably get a much newer/nicer triumph for 4k, than you would a monster. The triumph will be more reliable id guess too.

I keep my eyes open everyday for one, and send you the ducs that seem worthwhile. (they hold their value pretty well it seems, esp comparitively to what you’re getting for the price)

I like the Ducati. I rode a Monster S4R for a week this summer. It was great.

The maintenance or repair costs are high but comes with the territory.

I like Ducati. The speed 4 looks cool too.

Looking to get my first bike and these are the two that I am currently considering. I’d like to hear some input from any who have owned or ridden either or both of these.

How about posting pics of the bikes you like?

With that said, I’d go Triumph, there is a dealer a few miles out side of Clarence on Main St that is GREAT. You’re looking at bikes with a bit more maintenance and you aren’t going to have it more than a year or two before you buy a brand new one man, that’s my reasoning. Why drive that long ass trek down the 400 just for some repair or parts ya know. You don’t really live that far from bucks.

Thanks for the (misguided :lol:) vote of confidence. I really like the look of both bikes and I have no experience on bikes. I am looking to get into something fairly inexpensive and not too hp or large/heavy to start. I’m sure you are right that if I enjoy it I will upgrade within a year or two.

I like Ducati. The speed 4 looks cool too.

Maintenance and reliability are definitely important, but I am more interested in what will be easier to ride on for a beginner between these two bikes or any others that may be similar.

I like the naked bike look, particularly the Speed Triple and the Monster. I have looked at some of the Jap competitors, but I prefer the looks of these two.

you just said, you dont need speed (still in the 12’s id imagine), you want cheap, you want reliable, and you like the naked look of a bike.

spend 3k on an sv, ride it for a year, get your feet wet, and sell it for EXACTLY what you want after.

I know you really want the exotic side of things, but an sv will determine if you really truly enjoy motorcycles, while allowing you to have fun, and be competitive if you want to get into trackdays etc etc.

HELL KEEP IT FOR A COUPLE MONTHS, buy what you want and then sell it so you dont have any down time, i trust 10k in motorcycles wouldnt be too detrimental to your finances. I may be wrong so forgive me if I’m offending or being to judgemental. (you just seem to do fairly well based on age/car/home/etc. :tup:

Get something cheap, weak and used. If its your first bike you’ll drop it. Ride around on a slow POS for 2 years, learn to ride, then step up to baller bike status. :tup:

I have found some decent looking variants of both bikes in the sub $4k range so I am not too concerned about the price compared to a SV650 etc. I am more interested in how manageable these two bikes would be for a beginner. I am not looking to ever get something insanely fast on two wheels. No offense taken on the $ comment. Thanks for all the advice.

RELIABILITY might be another strong reason to look into an sv. I’m not familiar with any insanely fast naked bike as far as I know. Esp in the monster/triumph families. But trust me when I say, the power is addictive, and a ton of fun :evil:

How many miles do you see yourself putting on this thing in a year? any long distance rides? Bring it on any trips? track days? just daily pleasure? commuting? Taking it to shows etc etc…?
