building a badass file server.

My little winter project is going to be to build a nice fileserver for my home to serve music, dvd isos, etc, to 4 client pc’s.

I have a real nice new antec full tower case with their big wattage psu.

I picked up a socket 754 athlon64 processor and stock heatsink for a song.

I have 4 drives, 2 are 250mg maxtor ide drives, 2 are 250gig maxtor sata drives.

I want to run each pair in a RAID1 array.

The only thing i have to buy is a new motherboard.

I’m steering towards one with onboard video.

Should I get one with onboard RAID? Do these things actually work properly?

Or should I just get two promise cards, one SATA one IDE RAID, and do it that way?

Now for the OS. I don’t have any legit copies of xp sitting here. I do have a 2000 Pro copy that i’m not using.

Should I use 2k pro or something linux oriented like Freenas.org?

The freenas was nice because it was linux, and it had a linksys router type configuration to it.

on board raid and video are stupid… you can get what you need for cheap

some boards will have the onboard, but you can get a nice raid card for cheap

use xp who cares if its legit

I run a similar fileserver & network.

promise card(s)
onboard video (its just a file server)
xp pro
