You don’t file with the secretary of state, you file it with the county clerk. And the advantage of it is that you can conduct business as a ficticious name.
So if you’re not registered you have to be “John Doe’s Plumbing”, but if you register you can be “Pipe Cleaning Dudes”? Just for example of course.
So i can go by the name Dr. Kenneth Noyzwater!!

for a small business, your best option is usually a LLC. you get a lot of the perks of going INC, but your not.
this is different than going through the county clerk, i already did that.
Keep in mind with a DBA you are liable, with an LLC or INC “they” can’t go after you personally. It’s worth the $1000 to go to and INC if there is any risk involved.
