im not a lazy, piece of shit, salesperson. I would rather not disclose where i work, you never know whos looking!!!but i do not blame it all on being slow. Yes prospecting does help, but there has to be some outside source, and this week with the phones being down, everyone thinks that we are closed!!!
This.
1 - Yes.
4/5 - You are.
6 - Learn your fucking job.
I would try something closer to home. Driving 40 miles to work is one thing, if you love the job, if you have a car that gets 40 mpg and you are getting paid enough to financially make it worth your while. Otherwise it is costing you (more than normal) to go to work. For what it’s worth if there was anything else in your area that payed somewhat close to what you are making I would try that or finish school.
Oh and quit smoking if you still do. No one likes talking to salesman that reek of cigarette smell, whether its on your breath or clothes, even smokers.
Retail sales is a tough racket.
I’m still not buying that car man.
holy shit dude. get out.
the reason you’re only seeing 2 ups is because you’ve sat around all week posting on nyspeed instead of generating leads.
Working with car dealers most of my adult life I will agree most salesmen are not trying to rape you, on the other hand I have seen many F&I guys that will take you to the cleaners if you are not careful (educated).
Quick story:
I was picking up some service contracts at a OEM store that is now closed with a girl I was training and looking at dealer cost vs customer cost on one guys stack. Most are healthy but nothing crazy and then I see one contract that has a huge markup.
Ask the guy if it was a mistake, he smirks and says no, I really rang the bell on that one. He goes on to say that it was a friend of his mother and she was buying anything he was selling.
My trainee looks at him with disgust and says how do you sleep at night?
He looks at her and says, with a bigger smile and says “Really well, in my big house, in my big bed, but I am working on installing a fountain to add some tranquility and that contract will help me get there.”
Obliviously one guy does not represent the group in total, but I know the F&I office can be a dangerous place for an uneducated consumer.
Here’s my 2 cents, right or wrong… this is my view on car buying and the whole experience:
Are you clueless as to what a consumer mentality is when they come in to buy a car? It’s a shitty game, made for negotiators. Most people fear that, so they’re going to act like they know everything so that they don’t feel like they got bent over. Even if you’re nice, you are the enemy, plain and simple.
If you come up to me wanting to talk and I say “I’m just looking.” that is my way of saying “Get the hell away from me. I am the one with the money, I will come to you if I want to chat. I don’t need to be bothered yet.”
When buying a car, I do my homework first. Anyone who doesn’t is an idiot. With the massive amounts of car buying calculators and tools available on the internet, you should know EXACTLY what you want, what you’ll pay for it and an estimate of how much you will end up paying per month after you’re done. With that, you go physically to the dealer and deal with the game… which is where YOU come in. By the time I get there, I’m already psyched to beat you.
If the salesman wants it easy, they’ll deal with your “I know more than you” mentality, because frankly, we know more about what we can and cannot buy, and how much we want it for. We will not tell you that. Hell, we probably won’t even tell you about our shitty trade in either, up until we start paperwork!
When I go to buy a car, my job is to get it for as cheap as possible in any way I can. That includes fucking you over and hopefully making you walk away with $0 commission. The less you make, the cheaper I get the car. Plain and simple, after I get the car, do you really think I go home and think about you? You’re not my “friend” and I don’t want to know you, sorry.
It’s a game. I want to win it. You are in my way from me getting what I want. I don’t care if you’re rich or poor, you are just the guy I have to deal with to win my game. Sadly, you are the middle man between the real game player… that guy in the office who you have to go see and get “numbers.” If I play my game right, he can’t fool me… and you are the one will hate both of us at the end of the day.
My favorite part of the game is that I have the money that you want. If I don’t like how the game is going, I’ll act like a 5 year old and quit.
Have a great week at work. Hopefully this will enlighten you, since you clearly think that you’re the one in charge of the customers…
hahahahahahahaha and Baldy wins.
at this point I only view sales people at dealerships as barriers.
- They’re people who keep me from checking out cars in the way that I would like.
- They’re a barrier between me and the real person capable of making the deal that I want.
So basically I view them as a babysitter that I don’t want who’s being paid to keep me from getting into trouble and from taking up the “valuable” time of the people in the back room.
A friend gave me a great quote that applies well to car sales: “Americans hate to negotiate, but the only thing they hate more than negotiating is finding out they paid more for something than somebody else did”
that sums it all up.
Sales people - Do all the work that is necessary to get the person to like the dealership, show the product and educate the consumer into making the right purchase.
Managers - Maintain the dealership and make sure the doors open tomorrow.
As a manager, I don’t know shit about the cars. Sure I can tell you how much I own it for, but is it even the car you want?

The best price is not the lowest one.
I’d rather buy a car from a reputable dealer and spend more than buy a car from a shit dealer and have to deal with them when a problem arises. It’s why people stay in nicer hotels when they go out of town.

call the fucking wahmbulance!
“It’s Worse To Pay Too Little” - It is unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you sometimes lose a little money, that’s all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits pay a little and getting a lot - it can’t be done! If you buy from the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.
dude, do something to get fired and sit home and collect unenjoyment til you find something better. no way in hell im going to work a job especually 55 hours a week for not even 300 bucks and it doesnt cover gas.
I made the mistale of going to a certain ford store once and caught some asshole who litterally asked me what I wanted to pay for the car. Nothing dickhead. I want it for free. I immediately left and went to towne who we have been dealing with for ever. I ordered my car, waited a week, and picked it up. no hassle at all.
Not all sales guys are scum but you guys all get grouped in together.
First off, I still cant believe that we still get these types of reactions, that are so fucking immature on this site. Why cant people just give an opinion or whatever without being a fucking idiot. Seriously is retarded and grow the fuck up. No reason to act like a dick through a computer, at all.
Telling someone to go fuck themselves because they have complaints about the way they are misconstrewed at work is got to be the stupidest shit i ever heard. If this is how you feel, then great, what the fuck ever, but ive seen things posted way worse than this and the reactions werent nearly as assanine as some of the ones in here. Im a grown fucking adult, that has to make a living like everyone else, and stating my opinion about what i am seeing around my place of employment is really no reason to go off and have a fucking fit about it. If you feel this strongly that i should go fuck myself than good for you but i know that have the people on hear only say that kinda shit to go along with someone elses point of view, or because they dont know the original poster. If i had a big name on the site, noone would have reacted that way…end of story…
you all have made my point!!! you all think im sitting around doing nothing all day then wonder why im not getting ups. This couldnt be farther from the truth. Do i have time to be on nyspeed? of course i do, shit im here from 8 am till 830-9 pm at some point you need a break a few times a day. Im glad people are giving their honest opinions. its a great way to get a feel for what the general public is feeling when they want to get a car. But you must remember most people here see a car as a way of life, expression of them, or whatever. Alot of people just want something that seats their 6 kids and gets more than 12mpg.
and don yea id love to go back to school, but its so expensive who the fuck can afford it anymore. all the companies have put caps on the loans and you cannot exceed them, so once you get to that limit its time to pay out of pocket. And 700 a month isnt reasonable when you only make say 1100-1300 per month. Most jobs require degrees, which require $$$ so its a double edge sword. Cant afford school, but cant afford to work for 10 an hour.
The reactions I feel stem from the whiny nature of the post, “poor me, I’m the only one like this”.
You’ll find these same problems with a lot of jobs/careers.
Join the millions of others in the same boat, hell even college grads aren’t guaranteed a job anymore. They end up coming out of school with astronomical loans for degrees that will take them decades to pay off.
Main point being, there is always someone in the same boat OR worse off then you.
It’s not easy, but be grateful for what you do have and continue to push on like the rest of us.
Working for $10 an hour with no Degree isnt to bad. Shit i have a degree and dont even use it. Instead i work inside and deliver pizza right now, till i go back to school for an X-ray Tech… go deliver pizza or work in the food, maybe you suck at selling cars and thats y you make 5.35 an hour. Do you live at home? If your only bringing home 300 a week im sure you can get accistance for school unless it has alrdy taken you 4 years to get a 2 yr degree. and u have loans up the A$$.
Edit also what dealership do you work for? maybe ill come in and try to buy a car from you then post on here how bad you suck at your job. if your the only salesman on the floor for an entire week and you cant make more than 2 sales either find a new job bc the dealership sucks OR ITS YOU!
I didnt mean the original post to be whiny, but rereading it again it may seem that way to me as well.
There have only been 2 people in the store or on the lot since saturday, so i dont think its all me just yet!
some things i am doing to change this is to go through and call old repair order customers, or calling other customers that salesman have sold to before i worked here. hopefully this will get some people coming my way.
I think alot of people are in my boat, and i understand everythings hard. I have been living on my own for 7 years since i was 17-18 and it has been a struggle. But i find ways around it, such as working multiple jobs, or side jobs. It is what it is. Yes im glad to have a job. Im just more surprised that alot of people feel like salespeople are out to screw them, especially after they say that the salesman has no say over the deal anyways. Alot of jobs are underappreciated, in fact a few bad people in every profession has turned the world against most professions out there. Cops, doctors, lawyers or whatever. they bare not all bad people but most people hate them all equally.

and go ahead and tell me you dont get pissed off when people blame you for their order being late, or being cold, or fucked up, and tell me you are thrilled when some asshole tips you like .50 when they live in the best neighborhood in town and have a new 7 series in their driveway. Im not telling you that you suck at your job, please dont assume i suck at mine.
Ask Beck for a job at his dealership.
Right, seems strange that two guys the same age with the same job are in such different positions. Dudes got nice car, looking at houses and shit, and im up at 1 a.m. trying to make a few extra bucks plowing driveways till 7 when i can go to work, and try to sell some shit without pissing everyone off, and make an honest life for myself, then go out plowing again after work, get home at 11 p.m. just to try it all again tomorrow.
It’s because people go to school for some bullshit that isn’t a job in demand…
If you’re not doing well at selling cars get out ASAP I worked at a dealership for a few years and there were only a small percentage of sales guys that actually did consistently well…You’re just wasting your time you could be moving up the chain somewhere else.
And all that degree shit people mention is BS…Get a job in IT and work your way up if you’re at all good at computers…
