people who get screwed on cars and love it.

I’m really amazed how stupid people are when it comes to buying a car.

I must be crazy, but I research the piss out of 20 cars before I buy one, then I drill it down on autotrader, and get the very best deal possible.

Here’s a few recent stories about people I know who just play into the dealers hands.

My girlfriends father was looking for a car for his other daughter to go to college with. I offered my help, and showed him a few great buys on autotrader. One was a civic, the other was a corolla. Both were in ohio.

He balked at the idea, calling me crazy for driving anywhere to get a car.

So the next weekend, I see he is washing his latest purchase in the driveway for his daughter.

Its a 2000 chevy metro lsi. I see this thing, and couldn’t beleive that anyone would buy this car, let alone for their daughter.

He then went on to tell me the story of what a great deal he got on it. He walked into a lockport used car dealer, about one block from his house. The salesman didn’t have prices posted on the car, so instead of asking what costs what… The salesman just asks… So whats your budget?

He says oh 3-4 grand…

The salesman points to a 2000 metro LSI with 88k miles on the clock. Saying, oh we can let this beauty go for 4 grand, but that price is only good for today, we have someone else looking at it, and we need to move it.

Sold, he paid cash for it.

One week later, the metro needs a fuel pump, isn’t running, is bucking really hard when it does run right, and the daughter is afraid to drive it. Two weeks later, the back door does not open and the trunk does not unlatch. Three weeks later, the daughter is rear ended by a large black guy who gets out of the car, screams at her how its her fault, then peels off, hit and run style. Three weeks later, her father is afraid to make a claim on the insurance for the car, so the daughter is driving around said geo metro with a accordian for a trunk, and tie down straps holding the trunk closed. I’m not kidding.

So, then my girlfriends father decides its time for him to get the jeep he has always wanted. His ex brother in law works at paddock, and will get him a great deal. So he walks into the dealer, and ends up buying a 3 year old Jeep Liberty with bald tires for 2200 dollars less than the car cost when it was brand new. He bought it because the payment is right, and didn’t even consider the total price of the car at all.

So he approaches me, showing off his jeep liberty with scratches all over it, door dings, and bald tires. He asks me where should he get tires. I tell him order them on discounttiredirect, and have walmart install them, or just go to walmart and buy tires. He goes directly to goodyear, and pays a stupid high price for 4 all seasons. Now he wants to trade in the jeep for something that is better on gas, because he learns that the v6 liberty is getting 13mpg.

Another quick story, my uncle who is a research scientist. He is a bright buy when it comes to technical stuff, but day to day stuff he gets bent over every time. He takes his car to a garage because its a block from his house, and gets screwed every single time, and really doesn’t care.

He’s got a 2002 explorer that has about 75k miles on it. Thing was kept up so well, he had so many services done on it. Its the explorer many of us dream of buying used, it was so well kept. Brand new tires, everything. He thought the mileage was getting high, so he went to paddock to get a new hhr.

He comes by with the new hhr, and my father and I ask him the deal that he got. Paddock gave him 1500 for the 2002 explorer, and he said he was lucky to get that much because it had such “high mileage”. I went into shock, and didn’t even hear the rest of the deal because I was so shocked how bad he got ripped on the trade.

Last point, is a girl that I work with. Nice girl, shes just a black girl that grew up in georgia, and talks with that thick atlanta accent. The hounds at paddock must have drooled when they seen her. I offered to go with her when she bought a car so she wouldn’t get hosed, but she ended up taking her grandmother with her because she “knows” the one salesman at paddock because she bought her malibu there before.

So she went there to get an eqinox truck. I told her not to buy the truck, as the motor and trans were made in china, and it was pretty much a daewoo equinox.

She went there with 0 cash down, but had a 94 cavalier with 38k miles on it, from atlanta with zero rust. A dream beater for alot of guys on here. Paddock gave her 200 dollars for the car.

She walked out with a new malibu (not what she wanted), for only 399 per month, with nothing down.

She was then telling me that her insurance was “cheap”. She is paying 269 per month to insure said mailibu.

She then told me that the dealer would be putting scotchguard on the seats, and paint sealant on the paint (probably at some huge cost). Then she told me that she instructed the dealer to tint the windows, and install a non factory sunroof. Again probably a huge cost.

Are people that stupid or what?

I know someone who sold (traded in, probably) a 16g turbo 1995 DSM with low miles, some supporting mods and good maintenance (ran well) for $1500 because he needed something better on gas. Ugh.

lol at all.

i guess if they’re dumb, there’s nothing we can do…

stupidity makes the world go round’.

Wow.

their faults for getting hosed like that. some ppl are too trustworthy at the dealership. ppl get all giddy at the idea of a new car that they completely forget the realistic cost of things. as long as they can afford to make the payments they will not pay any attention.

It’s sad people are dumb enough to get screwed like that, but it explains why car dealers are such assholes to those of us that know better.

Dealers get used to doing work half assed, over charging, and getting away with it. Then when that rare person who know’s what they’re talking about shows up they get treated like shit because they don’t roll over and take it up the ass.

I would say its more ignorance than stupidity. .

For some people, cars are just appliances.
I research the hell out of damn near everything I buy. I researched TV dinners before.

I’ve never bought a car in this state - I always go where the best car is. 300M was in northern Ohio, Mustang was NH.

i would never buy from a dealer…

^ your hardcore… I was limited to around 40 miles when i got my car…

Now im looking for a S2K in So Cal… Something without salt… Fly and drive…

haha, there is only 1 dealership and 1 salesmen that I will deal with. My dad and family has been dealing with him for 15 years now. Plus my Dad is a ford Retiree so that helps too with us not getting ripped off. Theres never any games be played or any of that. its right to the point.

No shit man, thats what I did. Went to Ray Laks gave them an offer on an Evo MR, he said no way with out even checking with the Manager. He them replyed “I can get you into a Ralliart Galant for that price (33K)”
He even told me about Newman coming in and wanting to buy an MR for 36K…I was like “I dont think Newman would pay MSRP for any car” I told the guy to piss off, went to PA to pick up an Evo GSR. A week later Ray Laks manager calls me and says “you still looking for an MR?” I hate dealerships

When you try and help people out when buying a car they dont want your help because they think they can handle it. This happens alot when someone asks me to help them pick out a computer at the local best buy or circuit city. I can build a better one for less but they dont even care.

Yea, i don’t care much where the car is. My 98 neon R/T i bought from Atlanta. I bought a 95 neon from Detroit and my beater from rochester. The deal you get for for car you want out weighs the distance you have to go to get the car. When your spending that kind of cash, why not do research and get help as much as possible?

When I needed some work done to my convertable top, I went to an auto upolstry shop that I was told did great work on convertable mechanicals, too.

I went in on my lunch break, so I’ve got a really nice skirt on, knee high boots, nice shirt, jewelry, the whole girly works, instead of my typical jeans and a car shirt that I would have normally walked in there with.

After about 20 minutes of run around they told me they refused to diagnose the problem and give me an estimate unless I authorize them to go ahead and do the repair as well. They wont give me an estimate unless I authorize them to do the work. Excuse me? They then proceeded to tell me that my normal mechanic (Craig’s Autometric in Rochester, which I deal with all the time) must be trying to rip me off if they were able to give me a rough quote (even though I paid them their labor rate to remove the top, decide the new parts I needed, priced them out, and gave me the estimate).

They literally said to me “They are just trying to get you in the door. If you trust someplace shady like that, then take your business there.”

I walked right out the door.

Many businesses, whether it’s a car-related or not, will try to rip you off. It’s your responsibilty to be confident enough to do some research before you sign on the dotted line. I know people who have ended up buying compact cars for more than I bought my Boxster, and think they got great deals… It sucks, but that’s the way it is.

:mamoru: Had to!

i never really figured out why people won’t take the extra time to go somwhere NOT in buffalo to get the same if not better price on a car, thats in 10x’s better shape.

the rx7 is from oregon, silver 240sx was from florida and the red one was from north carolina :stuck_out_tongue:

If stupid people don’t want your advice, just sit back and watch them do whatever dumb shit they wanted to do in the first place.

speechless.

I remember someone a while ago at work telling me he got a great deal on a 2005 Saturn Vue for like 24k and about 30k miles on the clock. I kind of just giggled as it was a tad high even for a nicely loaded one. Then he proceeded to tell us how smooth the 4 cylinder was, and how he’ll save gas without AWD.

At the time, they were going for low 18k. I didn’t even say anything because he was so convinced he was special. That and I had to sit next to him for 2 more months no point in pissing him off letting him know he took it up the rear.

Similar case for me I went to Northtown to check out a 2002 WRX wagon with a fair amount of miles, and it had look like it was modded at some point. Online it stated 20k. I walked in pretending like I didn’t know anything, and claiming just having seen it to see what the salesman would do. He quoted me 23k initially, I walked out.

Several other places either wouldn’t deal with me, or used very high pressure sales tactics. Something that usually will just make me back off immediately.

A month later, I managed to get the probe in “safe” enough condition to drive it down to PA dumped it, and picked up a nice clean WRX Wagon for about 9k less with some more miles on it. Took a 270 mile drive each way, and had a fun road-trip with lots of pictures that got posted on the internets in the process, and made for a fun weekend.

EDIT: If you want a fun picture story thread!

Well, for all the people who got hosed… When I traded in my 6, I screwed the dealer

I beat the piss outta my 6 for 65k miles, and got 12,500 for it. It wasn’t worth 7. The clutch and tranny were going, the suspension was shot, the body had damage that was covered by a body kit, the tires were bald, the alternator hummed… and honestly NOBODY on here would want that car.

So, for all the little guys… I got the dealer back
