Cleaning Computers

I’m wondering how safe Air compressors are for cleaning out computers? Obviously use a low psi, but it would be easier than the compressed air that is $5 a can and gets too cold in about 10 seconds. I want to get just a small air compressor for <$100 that plugs in.

no problem.

make sure the computer is off though.
don’t blow the air directly on the computer at first… spray a couple seconds not towards the computer in case theres water in the line.
if you see a giant puff of water come out of the time when you’re spraying at the computer… let it dry for a bit before turning it on :stuck_out_tongue:

oh, low/high psi is no problem.
the computer isn’t going to blow away.
if something flies off your computer by being sprayed at 125psi from a foot away then it was bound to fall apart in a few days anyway.

I’ve used compressed air and co2 without issue.

any suggestions on a small air compressor. Must be able to be used indoors, not overly noisy.

They’ll all be somewhat loud, but oil-free are super loud.

I’ve always used 150 PSI to clean out computers. Works quite well.
Sometimes I even spin the fans really, really fast. Never had an issue.

I do spray the thing for a second to make sure there isn’t liquid in the line. Probably not a bad idea.

I use an air compressor. I would see if you can get a condensation canister to hook on to the end. It gives water from the air a place to collect so you don’t spray it on computers. Also hold the fans still while blowing to keep them from over spinning and ruining a bearing.

+1 on making sure your compressor isn’t full of water

150 psi within 3 inches of the motherboard works for me. I also spin the snot out of the fans and they have lasted 5+ years so far. Have yet to bend any of the sheet aluminum fins on my heat sinks yet, so i have zero fear of damaging a soldered electrical component of any sort.

I was worried more about statically charged air. I know vacuums will almost always (trust me) ruin computers.

Take it out back and power wash it speedped style.

For the most part, an installed motherboard is fairly durable. If you have it sitting alone on a carpet, without a case, and you’re using some sort of vacuum with a bristle attachment… Bad things MIGHT happen.

It’s a good idea to have one hand on a metal part of the case if you’re screwing around with it, but most times you can drag a mobo across a carpet and its fine.

In for suggestions on compressor. Good topic.

Maybe one of those small air nailer pancake pumps…

I use that exact compressor, but it’s loud.

perhaps a muffler and a water dryer?

We use shop air here every once in a while. Like said already, as long as there is no water in the lines, you should be good. Here we’re really not concerned with too much dirt in the computer though, more concerned with all the porn…

I have heard that compressed air isn’t the best to clean computers out with. It may be because of water buildup in them so I would suggest finding a way to make sure you aren’t blowing water at a computers internals. Haha.

I like my 2 stroke gas powered leaf blower. You have to bolt the computer case to the floor first though so that’s a little time consuming. It’s loud enough that you can’t hear people complain about the noise.
