computer nerd question. new system odd performance first AMD pc build for me.

AMD FX-8120 3.1ghz 8 core
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 board
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 2133
Western Digital WD Green sata 6.0 2tb
Nvidia GT610 2GB video card
Rosewell case I had with a 400w included psu
Win7 64bit

so I built that machine last night. right from the get go i noticed something odd. The mouse pointer would get choppy, and pause all together if the cpu is doing anything but idle. Like if I have nothing activly running, looking at the desktop it flys nice and smooth, clicking around windows and start menu stuff its smooth. As I was installing drivers and software, while it was processing the install the mouse pointer would be all but impossible to multitask with. it would be choppy, or not respond at all and sit there. as soone as the install stopped it would be fine.

Win7 installed all but the lan card, usb controller, and it installed a standard VGA driver over the Nvidia 610, out of the box as soon as the OS install was done. I installed all the drivers, and the video card driver. rebooted a few times and it still did it.

BIOS settings are stock on everything.

Only thing I notice odd is that CPUZ said the max mhz for the ram was 800mhz. I didnt get a chance to go into the bios yet and bump it up to the 2133 like it should be. its at a ratio of 1:4 though, so ill have to unlock that and hard set them I think. And the psu is probably a piece of shit, while it hasnt crashed, maybe it is loosing voltage/amperage while its working hard and bottlenecking something.

First AMD build for me. Never noticed this with the hundred other machines I built. Nick, CRD, JD, Ilya, Shady, etc… Calling all my computer nerds, got any ideas!

The memory clock setting is the first thing that jumps out at me too.

Did you update the BIOS? The BIOS wouldn’t bump it down that much unless something was really wrong with it (not able to go higher) or the compatibility of the two parts (board/RAM).

That wouldn’t explain the choppy mouse but, from what you’ve given us…that’s the only thing that popped right out and who knows…could have a negative effect.

Memtest 86. Although, I am not really a computer nerd. Seems like their is a RAM problem.

Go there click the free download and load the ISO on a CD. then run it in boot process. Willing to bet that it is not working for certain code lengths.

ill pop out one chip and try that.

I put them in the slots they said to in the instructions, but maybe one is doa.

if I suspect that, ill run memtest for sure.

no i didnt flash the bios yet.

I’ve seen this happen when the power supply is too weak and/or flaky. Try removing any devices that aren’t 100% necessary for boot. 400w should be more then enough for your system though.

Here’s a good calculator: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

As mentioned above, I’d update the BIOS to the newest one released for the board.

Also, if you have two sticks of ram in it, drop down to one and see what it does.

Sometimes the default BIOS settings aren’t correct either. The ram may be running at the wrong voltage/clock/timings. Check against what the ram specifies.

Well i brought it to the shop plugged it in on the normal usb keyboard and mouse and it doesnt seem to do it anymore. I think it didnt like the wireless USB stuff I had at home.

Heard that happening myself, but it’s so rare I didn’t think anything of it. We had a machine here do it with a Microsoft combo.
