computer nerds UNITE... lol help me build a computer

ok, so I just got handed a bunch of old computer cases from work. I’m going to build myself a new machine and need a little advise. Now, I’m not an idiot (despite what you’ve heard :p) but some of the specs for processors I dont understand. I understand the processor speed and such… but what about all these other things listed?

I dont want to go and buy something… only to be disappointed later down the road.

ok so 64 bit support… I would assume it’s a 64 bit processor, now is it limited to that? can it function as a 32 bit? and is there any advantage to that?

cooling, yeah… like I said, I’m not a total idiot lol

Hyper threading, I know what that is… but is it worth it to pay extra for a HT chip?

L1 and L2 cache… what the heck does that mean? lol what do I want? (btw, I want this machine to be a powerhouse, yet still affordable)

multimedia instruction… again, I have no idea what this means.

Operating Frequency, thats a given lol

Process Type… again… no idea what it means. any “lamens terms” explination would be helpful

series… yeah, I know what that means…

voltage, I know that too lol

also… would it be more worth while to get a PCIE mother board or an AGP style?

And if it was you, what Mobo/Processor combo would you choose? One more thing, any brands that you’d reccomend I should stay away from?

thanks a million

ok heres my imput on this

go with 64 bit, not alot of programs use it now, but they will, and yes its 32 bit when needed. (AMD all the way also)

dont be too concerned about the cache, just get the 64 bit AMD and you will be all set. the cache on the the AMD is plenty.

Thermaltake makes great cooling stuff–relativly cheap for the cooling it does.

Again dont be too concerned with all that other stuff u have listed, frequency, process, and instruction

Def get PCIe

Anything Asus and AMD you cant go wrong for the mobo and processor.

good luck.

:word:

ASUS is nice…

the best!!!

I recommend getting the package deal - MOBO and CPU. You save some $$ and are guaranteed to have them work together.

Also don’t skimp out on the HD. A slow/unstable HD will effect every aspect of the machine. And at least a gig of RAM.

Raptor SATA 10k rpm 74 gigger.

I have that one for my OS drive, umm very fast to say the least.

sata is native to most of the new chipsets right? they make for a much cleaner install than those giant ide cables too. grab 2 or more hd’s too, so you can have a storage drive with files you dont want to lose.

SATA is native to almost all new mobos now, usually having 4 ports for them. Most of the new PS also come with a SATA power connector also, so no need for the molex retrofit.

2 HDD is not enough, u need like 5-6

if you have 5-6HDs you also have too much porn.

actually i have 0 porn, unlike u and ur brother.

i have dish network for porn, dont need to dl it.

i dont DL porn either. Except that one time.
