I am going to be shopping for a new laptop soon, my 15" macbook pro is a little big and heavy for me. The laptop I have in mind is the 13" macbook air.
Please don’t make this an OSX/Windows debate, I just have a few technical questions that I feel like many of you could answer.
My current laptop specs:
July 2009 15.4" MacBook Pro
2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1067MHz DDR3
The term flash storage is new to me, I don’t even know how to find out how much my laptop has now.
Basically my question is if I have never to my knowledge worked my computer to its limits, will the “downgrade” in speed affect the day-to-day performance of the Air in relation to my Pro?
Programs I use a lot:
Traktor Pro 2 (this is the only program running when I am using it)
Safari
Word
Excel
iPhoto
iMovie
Flash storage is probably referring to SSD (Solid State Drive) which doesn’t use traditional hard drive platters. It’s all ‘flash’ based (no moving parts). Leave it to Apple to not use the correct term for the hard drive :lol. Since there is no physical parts inside compared to a traditional hard drive, the speed of the drive is much faster since it’s all ‘software’.
And you’re not really downgrading in speed. Core i5 is faster than Core 2 Duo in it’s architecture so even though the speed is lower, the highway is faster/wider, thus balancing out. Either way, for what you do, you’ll be fine.
You should by a nice Windows machine. Just sayin. :lol
I would but my roommate wants to buy mine and swap out the CD drive for an SSD, upgrade to 500gb of hard drive space, 8GB RAM from 4GB, etc. For a few hundo I could grab an Air
he’s giving me what it’s worth, yeah. he runs a lot more shit than me though so it might be worth it for him, i don’t know nearly enough about computers to judge that though.
See the thread in my signature bro. I’ll give him a little discount if you can set it up. $110 shipped via USPS ground? I’m negotiable to an extent, but it retails new for $130 so…he’s already getting a deal.
Kramer, I have the i5 11" Air and I love it! It will do everything that you do flawlessly plus some. Battery life is great (even better on the 13" model). There is an optional processor upgrade to an i7 too for like $100 extra if you feel you may want it.
I highly recommend switching over to the air. I bet you that the new air will feel twice as fast if not more then your old pro (a lot to do with the SSD).
