Anyone a pro at removing windshields without damaging the trim that clips in around it?
windshield is the last piece that needs to be removed to prep the shell for paint.
also, it would be fucking sweet if anyone had a commercial account at a paint store (al-wil or napa or carquest). I actually have half a quart roughly of the correct mix, with the mix info/label still in tact from when I painted the euro bumpers I previously had (got that paint from al-wil)
also, I’ve now gone through 4 harbor freight paint guns in 2 months…the quality has actually FAR dwindled. the first three leaked immediately (meaning paint somehow finds its way all over the body of the gun and trigger, and drips into your paintjob if you don’t notice it in time). the 4th one (I kept swapping them out and paying the $4 to renew the replacement plan) was fine the first use (first time I didn’t take apart and clean the gun before 1st use)…I thought “sweet, maybe this one will actually work”. Well, it doesn’t. I cleaned the paint from the first use and it fucking leaked on second use, just like the previous 3 guns.
I need to get a decent entry-level gun without breaking the bank. A friend in the body-work industry recommended a SHARPE. Anyone got a hookup on a nice-ish HVLP gun? or maybe a nice used one willing to let go for a fair price for a chap like myself?
if the windshield was out and I had a decent spray gun, I think I could have the shell/hatch/bumpers done/painted end of next week/weekend. I don’t know when I’ll be able to mold and produce new fenders, but I won’t mind running these hybrid mock-up fenders in primer temporarily until I have some time to mold them and make fiberglass ones to paint and install
This is the “Best” starter gun IMO: http://www.eastwood.com/two-economy-hvlp-paint-gun-kit.html
You get a detail gun as a bonus…and you’ll probably never really use it. But, you will need some different needles for Primer and Clear with that gun.
I can get a super nice SHARPE 1.3mm tip’d gun for $115 or so, that should be better than the economy kit gun you linked, and most likely very close in quality to the Devilbiss for hald the price. I’m also trying to get in contact with my buddie’s uncle who is one of the auto-body teachers at ECC to see if he has a nice used gun he’s willing to sell cheap or if he can get me any kind of deal/discount somewhere on a nice gun for myself…considering I’ll be painting at least 3 full cars in the next 6 months or less
fuck that. Everything done to this car I’ve done myself with a few sets of helping hands…I plan to keep it that way. I’m capable, and one of my favorite parts is being able to say “I did that” when someone asks about a certain part of the car
“how’d you get RS bodywork”
-I made it
“who installed it”
-I did, with some friends as helpers
“who painted it”
-I did
meanwhile, Chris came by as he’s an expert on refurbishing headlights, so we baked mine and did the black inside treatment and he’s going to take them home and refurbish the exterior of the lenses like new!
I <3 my devilbiss. Going from an entry level craftsman gun to the devilbiss was a huge difference, if you plan on painting more after this I’d suggest the devilbiss. Not to mention the dekups are tits.
well I did a little more today after work. Drilled the heads off the pop-rivets on the driver side rear quarter, and threw on some short-strand infused body filler on, then block sanded down. Going to need another coat or two to get it perfect, but this is a royal pain in the nuts.
