This is going to be awesome.
worked on it a bit yesterday. I’m in the part of the build that sucks the absolute most…laying body filler and block sanding for hours to get things to look right. These next four pictures are at least 6hrs worth of filler/sanding work
this is after one coat of tiger hair filler, followed by a coat of regular filler.
Then after some touch-ups and whatnot I decided to spray with primer to see where I’m at. It’s getting pretty close, but still needs some work. The major shapes are there, but I need to do some more filler work and start stepping my sandpaper grits up so it smooths out nice. right now it’s in 80-grit for shape, so I’m gonna jump to 180 on the next pass, then 320, then I’ll spray the whole deal in primer/surfacer (high-build) to sand out with 600 and 800 grit before sealer and paint.
probably have another 6-10hrs of work to go just on this quarter, then repeat for the other side, and repeat for the passenger front fender. Lots of work still to go, trying to keep motivated.
Looking good! This is the worst part of body work but it will pay off!!! Keep up the awesome work nick!
Probably doesn’t help with the humidity, that primer filler takes forever to dry remember?
^ Thanks for the pics checko! Phone died while Nick and I were working on the rear quarters some more. Got the driver rear REALLY REALLY close to finished…I’m thinking the coat of bondo that’s pictured is the last coat it will need before primer-surfacer. Also finished scuffing the passenger rear and laid up the tiger-hair filler. We’re in the home stretch fellas!
Looking good, nice progress  This may be in the thread already but what’s the color choice you’re going with? Same red currently?
Sticking with the red to avoid painting the jams and engine bay, because if I was going to do a color change it’d be to the blue that the bumpers came in or the lime green the mk2 RS came in :
Is this AWD yet?
shush you. i want to see him actually driving this for a little while before it gets ripped apart even more, lol.
lol. Well we all know how Nick is. He will finish this portion of it, drive it, break it, rip it all apart, try to fix it his way, get pissed, want to sell it, then decide to do a complete makeover from scratch and in the meantime of that pick up 4 more projects haha.
this is probably accurate, LOL
lol
hmmmmm. I may need to put a order in for some pieces. I keep passing a hatch in the city. I wouldnt cut out my 2nd gen
looking good. sorry if u already mentioned it but what wheels are u going with?
I’m willing to make every single body part necessary for the conversion for $2500. That is a serious and real-world number based on material costs and number of hours it takes to make all the peices. We’re talking both bumpers, front fenders, rear quarterpanels, sideskirts, rear wing. I could do the install and paint, but it ain’t gonna be cheap or quick because I don’t work 8hrs a day in a body shop lol.
as for wheels, I ordered a set of 18x8 Team Dynamics IMOLA’s in graphite finish. If I find that I can squeeze a wider wheel without contacting the fiberglass flair, then I will eventually order a more aggressive set of wheels and use the T.D.'s as track wheels.
Checko stopped by again and got me off the couch. The driver side rear is done. Just needs primer-surfacer and 400-grit wetsand before paint. Going to get up tomorrow and jump right on the passenger side and see how far I can get before I get too tired/frustrated.
You frustrated? NEVER!
Awesome!
Keep it coming!
Nice work man!
