Cowl hoods only work when they have blue neons in them.
The provide plenty of room for a TV under there too with all the added room a cowl gives you…

I had a reverse cowl on my Saturn and it worked GREAT! The engine was way way cooler, the temp gauge was always on C unless I was racing. Fuel mileage kinda sucked (the saturn board said something about closed loop, or was it open loop? anyway, I didn’t care) but it was worth it to keep everything cold!

The way that a cowl hood works is to create a low pressure zone just beyond the cowl. This increases the amount of air that flows over the top of the engine… coincidentally where your air intake is on a carbureted V8. Since the flux has increased across the engine, the temperature delta decreases and the air entering the engine is cooler.
It’s a common misconception (as the above post indicates) that a cowl hood causes the engine to draw air from the rear of the cowl. This is only true when the vehicle is at rest.
