lol you’re comparing buying a 130k mile 15 year old civic to leasing like a new CR-V.
Here’s how it really breaks down, speaking from experience since I went through this exact situation a couple of months ago and put my money where my mouth is:
Cheap purchase:
$5k cash, plus lets say a 20% probability of a $2k in maintenance and repairs = $5400 minus $2k resale = $3400 over 4 years. Realistically a $5k car is probably going to have bald tires so $400 for M&R is really aggressive. But we’ll continue.
Civic lease:
$130/mo zero down x 48 mo = $6240 over 4 years minus making $1k on buyout and selling it yourself at the end = $5240 over 4 years
$1800 dollar premium to drive a new car over 4 years. <$500/year to be able to get to work on time every day and spend 0 time fixing your rust bucket. Probably cheaper insurance too.
The deal breaker for me was if you insist on that $5k beater being equally safe then you’re looking at shit like Volvo’s or bigger cars that get <30mpg. At $4/gallon that 5 mpg difference quickly eats up the premium you’re paying for a new car.

But regardless, this is for an 18 year old broad. I’m guessing she doesn’t have a steady income so entering into a payment contract is probably a bad idea even if it makes sense on paper.
She should probably just buy a beater and slob knob for repairs while going to school so she can make real money and lease a car someday.
Eh I don’t remember what the monthly was for zero down. I put $3k down and am paying $99/mo. I had the cash and it worked out a bit cheaper than the zero down option.
Yeah now that I look that doesn’t seem right. Maybe it was $189/mo? I don’t remember.
Here’s how I racked out my Civic lease against the S70 that I used as an example. The S70 was pretty typical of what I was looking at since I wouldn’t consider the 10-15 year old Civics that $5k will get you since they don’t fare well in crash tests.
The $14k resale of the Civic is pretty aggressive, but oh well. I was pretty aggressive with the M&R and depreciation on the beater too. It still works out to a very small premium to drive a new car with a warranty.
The lease would have you at $5800 over 2 years, where she would, then, have to turn around and spend another $5,800 for the next two years and we are back to almost $12,000 over the full 48months. There is no reason a $5,000 car won’t last 4 years.
And yes you can get a 48/mo loan at the bank for $5000, that’s what mine was when I bought the Neon.
I was going to say, if that were true, I’d be all over it myself.
So either way, you’re at $6000 over 2 years as well and approx $12,000 over 48 months. Now, is it fair to say, that over the 4 years she can save up to approximately $6000 over the life of her loan and typically the maintenance will not be that much? Is it a risk? Yes. One worth taking? Possibly. I think in the OP’s case it’s worth it.
For sure. Any way I slice it I’m paying a premium to virtually guarantee getting to work on time every day and not have to spend a Saturday fixing my shit when I’d rather be playing with my kid. It just worked out to a much smaller premium than I ever would have expected if my wife hadn’t made me look at leasing.
These things don’t really matter to an 18 year old girl so she’s probably better carrying the risk.

Holy fuck when did I get so old???
And why am I still on the internet when I’m old as fuck???
That’s where I am going with it. This is going to fit her budget better. It’s definitely not for everyone, however most people here think they know whats right for everyone.
EDIT: Oh and I agree with your mostly overlooked statement of going to school without a car. It’s a win/win.
this thread is killing me. How can somebody who worked at two dealers and has a marketing degree be so horrible at finding a beater for his girlfriend.
Living on Campus is a ton and can add 30k to your Loan over 4 years. Having a car is no doubt awesome, no one wants to be the guy who calls everybody for a ride. And besides, you can live on campus for 7 months of the year. Also, dorms suck.
lol yeah living in the same hallway as a bunch of hot broads who have just moved away from home and want to explore their independence really sucks :pedo:
Probably for the same reasons that he’s not making 6 figures selling cars and thinks that leasing is for the “established” and for people who have to have a new car every 3 years.
