DIY Basement Renovation Project: Adding Bedroom and Bath.

Those are just electric floor elements? I wonder what the cost of operation for those is compared to steam/hot water.

I also assume that you aren’t really using those to heat the room, just for comfort?

yeah, they are just resistive elements. This partular mat runs at about 220 watts when on…so only uses the electricty of a few lightbulbs. A heated floor is awesome first thing in the morning when getting in the shower or pooping.

installed for comfort. Bottom line is the floor is a concrete slab in the basement so i wanted a heated bathroom floor in the winter. It has it’s own thermostat and can be set to different schedules the same as a regular thermostat.

 Friggen cool.

installed the lighting for the shower:

and after about 12hrs of tiling…i have about another 10 to go.

not to break my arm patting myself on the back…, but i’m really loving the layout of the tile work. cutting all those strips of tile paid off.

NIce!

Gonna be one dark basement though lol

fuck that pat yourself on the back…thats a lot of work that turned out pretty damn nice

you mean my sex dungeon?

The only lights i turned on in that pic were the 2 you see and turned the flash on the camera off and the the tile was wet…so yeah, it looks a bit darker then it actually is. Plus it all plays into a few other lighting touches i have that are yet to be installed into the shower. the final lighting won’t be revealed until all the hardware is installed

i offset the dark tile with a mint-green paint on the bathroom walls seen here:

It’s a color i would cringe at if complimented by any other color, but i think it works well here and really brightens the whole room up. .

cell phone pics with the other bathroom lights on:

Looks. Fucking. Awesome.

i know it doesn’t look like much…but i started polishing the concrete this weekend and using a 4" grinder with a diamond cup wheel really flings black mud around well. I was covered head to toe in black concrete mud. So far i ground it smooth and sanded with 80grit sand paper on my orbital. I’m only going to sand it to 220 then wax/seal it so that it’s not too slipery for obvious reasons.

progress to date, hoping to get the tiling done today so i can start grouting everything:

wow, you do some great work man. the tile is going to look great

sorry.
i wish i would have saw this when i was over seas, next time use a product like this before putting any tile in the show or moist area’s

^ I think i’m good on the waterproofing. Behind the backer board i have 6mil plastic sheeting leading into the floor pan which is 40mil pvc which i tested with standing water for 24hrs. The backer board seams have mesh tape and mortar. I don’t anticipate any problems at this point.

didn’t notice at first, but  for threading that shower head in there. that shower ‘L’ was burried at least 6" behind the drywall.

yes, it works well for waterproofing, but it is also a fracture membrane. No worries. Great work, let me know if you need any help.

yeah, i threaded a 6" nipple in before putting the hardbacker board on the ceiling, then attached the shower head. BTW, i’m thinking this monday evening would work best to get everything trimmed out. But that is labor day…so lmk.

Stop by labor day if you wish…i’ll be finishing up the bathroom in the morning then we can head next door to a lamb roast on the golf course for lunch! lmk.

good weekend overall. Brad (Breakstuff) got the plumbing finished up for me. I have yet to grout the shower and install the glass, but i was able to get the fixtures installed and some of the lighting.

Toilet may get swapped out, i’m not particularily happy with the size of this one:

testing the fixtures. the shower panel shoots the water about 20ft across the room, lol. so this is at 20% throttle. Running 3/4" copper line paid off. I have no shortage of water.

Looks amazing Josh.

Such great work.

wow, style is turning out VERY modern…not a bad thing I’m just really not used to it.

Looks like great work. That shower must be orgasmic.

^thanks guys

yeah, i definently like the feel of everything. I can’t wait to get the shower glass in… i just need to get the shower tile squared away and grouted. then it’s all the detail work. moldings, shelving, etc. Atleast the core stuff is done.
