Does .999999 = 1 vPOLL

this was necessary. just the kind of douchebagery that i expected from you.

well, i sunk to personal attacks because your logic is horrible, you clearly suck at math, and you are just a general idiot. It’s funnier if i just make fun of who you are, because your shitty logic makes fun of itself.

why don’t you explain where my logic is horrible, or where i suck at math?

it would be funnier if i just sunk to your level and physically attacked right? maybe uncalled for, but still worthwhile. moron.

ENOUGH!! No more BS in this thread or it’s getting da-lok…

actually, badazzss’s logic is correct.

To say something exists because it can not be proven otherwise is a fallacy know as “Appeal to Ignorance (Ad Ignorantiam)” (as described in The Elements of Reasoning 4th ed.)

:tup:

atleast in real world math your 100% correct

yes, 1/3 does = .33333~
pull out your calculator and divide 1 by 3

and read the thread and you will see how you go from
x = .9999
to
10x = 9.9999
to
9x = 9
to
x = 1

it is a very basic formula

:word:

when I use the calc in windows and divid 1 by 3, it = .3333333333333, but when I do 2/3 it = .6666666666667, which is not what was in the proof, so the proof MUST be wrong.

How the fuck do you go from 10x = .999999999 to 9x=9??? What math rule do you use for that?!

then your calc sucks and is rounding

my ti 86 doesnt lie

thats the formula for converting a repeating decimal to a fraction. this should have been learned in 9th grade, and then again in college level math.

http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/57041.html

^^^ werd I think thats because it’s a finite number… at any rate though, it should happen eventually down the ladder. This is all just theory though… it really cannot be proven.

like i said… if 1.000~ = 1… then how can .999~ = 1?

Are you saying that Windows is wrong???

And that formula is for converting to a fraction, and is improperly used for this application.

We all remember the 2=1 proofs (http://mathforum.org/dr.math/faq/faq.false.proof.html). You have to properly apply the formulas to get right answers - I learned that in college physics.

that forumla is being properly applied. it is for converting a repeating decimal to a fraction, and it is doing just that. it just so happens that the fraction turns out to be 9/9 or 1.

This thread is going nowhere fast Now.

oh… wait…

Or is it really 8.99999999999999999999999999999999999999~/9 :open_mouth:

x = .999999999…

Ok? With me so far? Good.

10x = 9.99999999999999…

With me?

10x - x = 9x

got it?

9.99999999… (or 10x) - .999999999… (or x) = 9 (or 9x)

If 9 = 9x then x = 1

THE PLANE WILL TAKE OFF!!!

Sorry, I was just suffering flashbacks there.

This really is quite simple people. Joe has probably layed it out in the easiest way so far.

if 1.000~ = 1… then how can .999~ = 1?
… just wondering

I’m not a math major here, but its a matter of .999 being a repeating decimal.

Joe and others have given the basic formulas and logical explinations. I myself can’t even begin to formulate a reason, my head hurts too much already and this week (all 3 days of it) has been a living hell and I don’t feel like explaining myself.

Bout how bout this: if 0.333…34 is used as a decimal representative of 1/3 (instead of 0.3333~), then what would you do with 0.99999~? If you round the last decimal place up, as you should, you would end up with 1.

Like I said, my head hurts too much right now.

if you put 1 drop of poison in lake ontario, does it have any poison in it?

edit- im just being a douche. i couldnt really care less if .9999 = 1 or not. all i know is that this thread sucks.
