Guys, its not .9999, its .9999~ meaning the 9 continues on forever.

The only reason that they say it is equal, is because you cannot subtract it from 1, because you cannot have 0.00000~, because that equals 0. And you cannot say “well, theres a 1 at the end there” but, there isn’t. The .9999~ goes on for eternity, just like the .0000~ does. It never stops to put the 1, meaning, its 0. so, 1-1 = 0. 1 - .9999~ = 0.0000~ which also equals 0.

I still think its unequal and that the math is flawed, because it is a different number. Just because you cant WRITE .000000~ with it wanting to have a 1 at the end, does not mean that it doesn’t exist!

But, in essense of mathematics today, it does in fact equal 1. Sadly.

although when calculating say a satilites path of passing pluto to do research and the camera/hightechequiptment need to be in the right place (where really really small numbers matter) the difference between .99999999 and 1 is hundreds of thousands of miles… and if nasa just said “close enough” you wouldet be gettin pics of pluto…

That is where the “trick” or, as I like to call it, the mathematical error lies. That equation was not solved correctly. That equation cannot be solved for a real number.

9.99~ and .99~ both have decimal places that go on for infinity. They are not real numbers. 9.99~ - .99~ is not = 9. It is equal to a number infinitely close to 9, but it is not a real number.

So while this is a cute trick of algebra, it is based on one false assumption: That you can solve infinity - infinity and get a real number. You cannot, as infinity is not a real number.

Solving the above equation the way they do it like saying infinity - infinity = zero…

Also… just because x = .99999999999 in the two equations you are subtracting… doesn’t mean you can just plug it in to the 9x = 9 equation…

Because guess what 9x = 9 … equates to x = 1…

Using the logic of whoever is trying to prove .9999999 = 1, I can plug any number I want into x… 897498275 = 1…

Just cause I prove x = .99999999 in equation #1 … doesn’t mean wherever x is I can imediatly plug in .99999999
