48÷2(9+3)=?

48÷2(9+3)=?

what do you think the answer is? calculators give different answers and are not to be trusted always.

2

2 or 288 depending on the order of operations used.

isn’t the order predetermined by rules?

Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction

Yeah i figured this was something more than it seemed so i googled it and thats what came up lol. It also said this will spark debates on forums :rofl

Definitely 2

2 if the proper order is used :tongue

I hate this thread. Poorly written problem, that is my answer

so the proper order wouldn’t be:

48÷2(9+3)=
48÷2(12)=
24(12)=288

This lol.

There is a reason why the ÷ symbol is not used in upper level math.

all calculators use the ÷ symbol, yet even they disagree.

Shouldn’t spark any debate, since the order of operations in math declares “parenthesis before division” (PEMDAS, see what I said earlier). Which means by definition, that things within the parenthesis are dealt with, followed by things connected to them.

haha yes because some are programmed differently than others. It is all how you interpret the multiplication. This will vary from human to human, calculator to calculator, and math software to math software.

Does a(b) take priority over a x b… that’s what this problem is all about. And it sucks. haha

calculator isn’t reading the order correctly

Oh I get what the debate is now. But still, multiplication happens before division.

no, they happen at the same time. It is PEM/DA/S

The P in pemdas involved the items inside the parenthesis nothing more.

Did you mean PE/MD/AS? I guess it just comes down to representation then.
