Does anyone know if it's possible...

…to track a car by the VIN number?

I don’t mean finding out a general area (ala Carfax), I mean actually finding out who owns it.

Possible? Yes.

Free? That I don’t know.

We used to subscribe to a service at work that allowed us to search motor vehicle registration searches, but we switched to a cheaper service.

I didn’t say free.

Do you know any cops?

Yes, and they won’t do it.

It’s not like I’m trying to stalk and kill someone, I just want to buy my old Impreza back.

What is the VIN?

PM’d.

Yes the police can.,…if a car is stolen they will know where it was from. Even if all the vins are removed there are about 15 places on most modern cars. I have spoken to a few cop friends of mine about this recently as I have run into people trying to sell stolen cars. They explained that they are able to track chopped and revinned cars…very interesting

I know the police can, but I know a trooper and he’d get into trouble for doing it for personal reasons.

PM’d

Also turned up this per google… Don’t know if it or what it costs…

I’m already waiting for the result of one of their searches, if that doesn’t work out, I’ll try and use what you PM’d me.

you fuckin stalker

Just so no one here wastes money in the same way I did, Carfax turned up a new registration on my car this May, www.abika.com claims it was last registered in 2003 (to me).

When I brought this to their attention, they said it was the best they could do, they never guaranteed current results, and despite the fact that the car was registered TO ME in their last record, they wouldn’t consider refunding my money.
