Electrial question...! 120v -> 240v

Chances are if you have 440v service in the building, you also have 220v. Tell you boss to get a 220v plug installed.

Then he’ll tell me to go fuck myself probably ;p

We actually had a meeting friday, about people becoming “too sensitive” when the boss or foreman says go fuck yourself, or to fuck off.

He said, when we tell you to go fuck yourself, just go fuck yourself.

Considering it took them over a week to get the maintenance guy to install a new line in the break room for the microwaves, after we got a new microwave in there… and the breaker kept tripping while having 2 microwaves running at once (LOL?)
So i doubt a 220v line in my booth would be done anytime within a year or so…

This is looking like my solution…

Not many jobs are piling on 30-40+ hours of OT/week right now… so I think I’ll stick it out, just trying to make due the best i can!

yeah if you try any of these ghetto hacks I guarantee you will fuck it up and smoke the heater, possibly getting yourself fired in the process for the gross NEC code violations and burning your shop down.

2 legs of the 480 line makes 480 volts, and there is no neutral. One leg of the 480 line is 277 volts. Like I already said, check the tag on the heater, it might work on 277!!!

sounds like my boss, yesterday i came into work to find a note on the board saying “STOP KICKING THE BACK DOOR OR I’LL KICK YOUR FACE IN”

they’re doing so well that they can hand out 30-40 hours of OT per week, but can’t heat the building?

Funny how that works, eh?
Or how they can buy front office staff new Chevy vehicles o.O
Front office is really, really warm… and ice cold in the summer (where we burn our asses off in the summer like you wouldn’t believe!)
When I say front office, I don’t mean like one room… It’s… like a seperate building more or less.
Engineering staff, reception, etc… oh yea… and a fucking gym underneath the office with a giant track/showers that we’re not allowed in, lol.

It’s a stable job in an unstable economy is the way I see it.
Have to make due with some shit, but it sure beats being unemployed.

hell yea it does, it just sucks that management can be so greedy and get away with it. Good luck in your quest for warmth

240 is line to line, 120 is line to neutral, but you can’t do this with our running a new pull from the pole

277 is line to neutral
480/1 is line to line
480/3 is the y connection

Edit: It should be 120/208 (commercial) or 240 (residential) or 277/480

If it’s single phase, yes, you are correct. If it’s 3phase, what I said is correct as well.

Edit: you still get 277v, there is a neutral in the 3 phase setup. So, you’re right.

480 is 3 phase.
Not that it matters really.
just going the lots of 120v heater route i think.

thanks <3

propane heater? kerosene? i dont know what kind of ventilation you have though… just saying.

Yea, but electric is free for me.
id have to pay for those to get filled every day.
Not going to pay to heat a 40-50k sq/ft shop w/ 80ft bays. :
good thought though. ;\

Unless maybe you guys can think of a way to combust 100% Ar or 95%ar/5%oxy.
I have unlimited supply of that too… if you can figure out a way to turn that in to a heating solution ;p
damn inert gasses ;\

i hear that… theres no way your little space heaters are going to help that much lol.

Good luck… tell him to buy a furnace…

EDIT: blow dryers… Lots of them.

lol, they have all the heaters in place… they just don’t use them! :[
think they’re nat gas.

and there is a furnace of sorts… right next to me. (well, about 15ft away)
Big ol incinerator… used to fire bellows @ 1825F all day long.
Can’t feel the heat from it in the winter, but I most sure definitely can feel it in the summer.

Anyhow, now that I"m at a computer and not a cell phone:

Any of these ghetto rigs would get the shop fined by OSHA. Electrical code violations = unsafe.

This thread has:
-Ways to convert the heater to 120 operation
-Ways to get 240V to the heater
-Ways to get 277V to the heater
-Ways to burn the shop down via incorrect information

If you don’t know which is which you shouldn’t be playing with wires. But you seem to have a reasonable grasp of that yourself.

Just get a couple of 120V heaters with fans and pray to God that global warming is real.

As for combusting Ar, I could make the tank it’s in burn but that’s about as close as I can get. :stuck_out_tongue:

a 20lb propane tank will go about 8 hours heater is about 180 and tank fill is 10-20 and it does not stink up the place

Its fucking snowing in my booth again. Ugh.
Ill put up pics when im home :s

Does that mean GeeHee would have to come get it, then other nyspeeders would do the actual burning?

lol ouch… +1
