I have a new email address with 1and1 (I know, not my choice) and it seems that depending on what wireless network I am connected to, my ability to send emails is bunko.
Most hosts I have work fine, but for example there are 2 available wireless networks that I see in my hotel. Via one I can send & receive, but the other I can only receive email.
Some people have used www.authsmtp.com to work around this but this seems retarded. Any idea why this may be happening? Outoing is on port 25.
Searched and can’t find anything similar, figure some supernerds may be able to shed some light.
Usually you have this issue if the other server doesn’t have SMTP Auth and they use some sort of IP based allow list.
Another example would be traveling and using POP3/SMTP from Timewarner but plugging into a verizon network usually the SMTP server wouldn’t allow you to send mail.
Is your email client kicking back an error message?
Yea I wasn’t thinking about the port blocking that makes sense a lot of organizations block port 25 out to prevent spamming and only allow access to their SMTP server.
Yeah, we are running into this a lot lately. Particular ISPs ,Att/SBCGlobal, Verizon and TDS, have started blocking port 25…switching them to 587 with SMTP auth usually take care of that
