engineers: I need a new graphing calculator

well my ti-83plus just officially shit the bed after 10 years of good service. In the fall I am starting ME at RIT so I don’t think it would have sufficed anyways.

What does everyone recommend?

i have a few ti 83 plus if youd like one

my ti-89 is amazing. saved my ass a ton of times

You’re not allowed to use a ti89 in a lot of classes, my 83 has done it all and I’m now 4th year ME there. Besides, if you need a fancy calculator to do your math for you, you’re going to be in trouble later on. If you have some really complicated math to do, use matlab.

hmm. good point.

maybe i’ll take apart my ti83. its only problem is that it doesnt turn on once in a while, but once its on it works just fine.

WTF? The only class I wasn’t aloud to use it in was differential equations but we couldn’t use any calculator with memory functions in it.

You will not be in trouble, there is no time in real life where you will not be able to use a calculator.

I love my Ti-89, but I’d part with it. Best calculator I’ve ever owned, by far.

I wasn’t allowed to use an 89 in any of my math classes, and while you’re in school, understanding the actual math helps with other classes. After, do whatever you want.

I’ve found that most people don’t even know how to use all the features the 83 has.

+1, i concur with the above.

scientific calculators can do derivatives, integrals, partials, the works (not to mention notes of any kind).

all the calc classes ive been in have never allowed scientific calculators (for tests), and anything else can be found online. hence why ive just sucked it up and stuck with a good ol’ TI-30XII lol

Meh, I tested out of the math classes going into college. The 89 was almost a requirement in failures and sure as fuck helped out with thermofluids

You can test out of calculus?

I use both the TI-89, and TI-83 for the classes that dont allow the 89, since it has ‘EE Pro’ and ‘ME Pro’, which does quite a bit.

83 has been perfect for my 4 years of schooling in ME. Like somebody said before, if you need more computing power, use matlab, you can do a lot more on there anyways.

I say you fix your 83 on the cheap or get a used one, and save your money for ass raping tuition

eh, scholarships and fed loans covered all but 4k. I’m gonna try the monthly payment plan for the rest, just gotta find a job sometime soon.

you can have one of mine for 20 dollars

Getting a 5 on the AP Calc BC test allows you to do that.

this is what us old school use…

Probably depends what school you go to. At UB, the only class where I wasn’t allowed to use my ti89 was diff eq.
