My old y-pipe is welded to my cat - what’s the best way to separate them? Grind the weld?

But how will I weld the new piece of pipe to the cat if there’s another piece still welded on? I’m not even sure if it slips over the cat or butts up to it - better check.
Exhaust work is my least favorite thing.
Cut, grind, reweld, nice and smooth.

I’ll definitely need some welding done. Course I have to get the heads on before I put the headers on. New head gaskets were bad. Pulled the wrapping off the package and the coating pulled off the gaskets! :mad:
