Exhaust Wrap

I was just wondering, I will have a downpipe with a flex section on my KA-T this summer so that I don’t crack my eBay manifold, or at least have less chance to crack it. loll

Anyways, I wanted to wrap the downpipe with DEI exhaust wrap, should I leave the flex section unwrapped? Or should I wrap over it? Thanks!

I’d leave it unwrapped. Makes no real sense in wrapping in other than promoting premature wear on the wrap. The flex is also more prone to rusting underneath the wrap.

I am in need of some 2" DEI wrap as well… where would you have picked it up from?

go to jrp

I haven’t bought it yet.

Thanks for the input, ganna leave it unwrapped.

By the way, I’ve heard of people saying wrapping eBay manifolds will make them crack faster, any truth in that?

Insert Bings CRX?

bottom mount T2 style Ka-t manifolds dont have problems.
Its the t3 topmount ka-t ebay manifolds that crack due to the weight of the turbo.

Id still wrap the manifold though … u can leave the downpipe

The bottom mount manifolds crack when not installed properly… ie. not using the support brackets and then not bracing your pre-cat exhuast properly…

having bad engine mounts will also contribute to manifold cracking.

i have a cheapo manifold on my car, ceramic coated and heat wrapped… over 30,000km’s on it now with over 320whp driven extremely hard 99.5% street.

no cracks.

however, instead of cracking the manifold i did split a turbo elbow along the top… rewelded it and i think my buddy james is using it now…

there is alot of downward pressure on the manifold / elbow on account of all the weight they bare. Anything you do to minimize that force or help the pieces cope will lengthen the life of your set up.

as for heat wrap, people say all kinds of things, but i’ve been okay so far and would never spend any more on a manifold unless it was a full-race.
