F-body Pinion seal leak...What to do?

Fix it if you see drips on the driveway. The only way a new seal will leak is if the yoke is grooved or you damage it during install. If it is you need to buy 1) a new yoke or 2) A yoke repair sleeve. You need to mark the nut & yoke. That way you don’t over tighten the nut, causing too much pinion bearing preload by crushing the crush sleeve to much… Really easy fix. A basic seal puller will get the old seal out. They make a tool for installing the new seal, but you don’t need it if your carefull. A leaking seal won’t cause whine unless you drive it a long time when really low on lube or if pinion bearing is way too loose. If it’s a lack of lube causing problem, chances are the damage is done & you might need to replace the pinion bearings & races. PM me with any questions or torque specs.

The other problem I had was the Torsen diff (99-02?) wasn’t working very well. When I drained the fluid, it seemed very thin. So I replaced it with one qt 85w-90 conventional & 1qt Royal Purple syn w/friction additive in it (since I had it in the garage already). This helped and now the Torsen is working better. Apparently the last owner used only Royal Purple w/ add. and may have still put more fric. mod. in also, which probably contributed to the fluid weeping out.

Rick, your procedure is the right way to do it, and the way I will do it when I change it again in the spring time.

The friction modifier reduces the grip of the Torsen, so if anyone adds twice the amount, and thinks it will increase grip you would be mistaken. Follow what Rick said, and it will hook up.

IMO, don’t use royal purple

Moser 12 bolt

Friction modifier is only for clutch based posi units, ie Auburn & Eaton

Wrong, the Zexel Torsen is a worm gear posi unit much like the aftermarket Detroit TrueTrac. There is NO wearable friction material in these differentials. Therefore friction modifier in these is a waste of money and will make NO difference in how the diff functions

Second that

Third That. With a spool.

meh, i had a spool… spools are gay… if you like driving the car.

Right now i have a Moser 9 inch with a tru trac and i couldn’t be happier.

truetracs are cool, until you look at them after some hard miles. I really think there a low rpm unit, and a lot of people are going to be having problems with them.

I drive my car everywhere. The only thing I don’t like about the spool is it sorta kills drag radials when turning. Besides that, it makes me slow down and never lets me drive it in the rain.

Turbo and chuck seem to like theirs, and idk who is rougher on equipment

Yeah dont i know it… i went through a set of BGF’s in 350 miles :picard:

Probably because you ran to much or to little tire psi…

I really should buy a F bod…hahaha

15-18 all day everyday…those mickey’s will still be on the car this season.:eekdance:
