I see your point, however, a rod bearing failure due to partially or fully clogged oil passages will cause increased friction which can in turn cause rod failure when stressed.

Agreed, but any modern day OEM engine can turn 300K and have like-new oil passages, as long as the proper oil was used and was changed at the correct intervals.
