FMIC or Turbo back exhaust?

So im looking at doing a few little things to the MS6.
Im not sure if i should do the FMIC kit or if i should get a turbo back exhaust? Just wondering what some of you guys think? Or what you would do first?

Catback exhausts don’t do much for them. Getting rid of the catalytic converters will help, so turbo back exhaust will open the car up. HOWEVER, they are known to have issues burning oil in the turbo with a lack of backpressure in the exhaust. So be forewarned, your turbo may or may not begin smoking with this modification.

FMIC will definitely help the car out. I would recommend an aftermarket re-circ valve, CPe-nano intake and Turbo Inlet Pipe if you are going to the FMIC. At that point, a tune will probably start to become a wise move as well, so a Cobb accessport should be on your list.

Honestly, the best place to start would be to skip doing the whole turbo back, and just throw a test pipe on the car. Then do the intake/TIP and a Cobb Accessport. You’ll see better gains than just 1 of the mods you listed.

WAT???

It’s a really difficult issue to explain, and I’m probably using incorrect terminology…I’ll be back with more info…but seriously, there are well documented reports of downpipes causing the turbo to smoke. Might have to do with crankcase ventilation. I’ll dig it up.

edit: I am confusing 2 seperate issues. There is a documented issue of turbos smoking due to crankcase vent issues. HOWEVER, it is also well documented that folks have tossed downpipes on speed3/6 and had their turbos begin smoking. It’s likely that their turbo seals were leaking BEFORE the downpipe, but that the cats were burning off the oil.

now you all know why my car has no engine related mods…fucking mazda/ford

That’s just so weird, turbo’s almost always thrive from little to no exhaust. I wonder if it is allowing them to build more boost than planned for, and then pushing them to spin too fast, causing the seals to go bad maybe?

you’re guess is as good as anyone’s…even with a few very knowledgeable fellas looking at the issues, nobody has solid answers.

Being a performance sedan/car/thing it is probably tuned right up to the hardware limits of the turbo. Less backpressure allows the turbo to overspeed. This get espically bad when you get into higher elevation and the thinner air. How restrictive is the stock downpipe compared to the aftermarket? The only real way to to put a turbo speed pick-up on the turbo and measure it both in stock form and with the larger DP then try to see what the limits are from the manufacturer.

It’s a K04 turbo pushing 14PSI out of the box

Well this isnt sounding good at all! I have a CP-e intake on it now. I was going to get a TIP for it also. i might just get that and call it a day. I dont to have any issues with the car.

The issues are hit or miss.

I would toss on an ebay test pipe and get a Cobb AP and call it a day. If your turbo smokes with the test pipe, at least it was cheap and you can pull it off and re-sell it.

yea true! I may just get the FMIC just for better cooling. Then get the AP just to tune it better to run with the FMIC. i mean its just my daily driver so im not worried about beating up any other cars haha. not like it could anyways haha

the only reason I advice against the front mount is because of the cost/benefit…you’re throwing money away without making other mods…especially when you live in a state where the air is already cool for 9 months out of the year.

Well im leaving for Kuwait in Jan so I’m buying some parts now and then getting the rest of the bolt-ons when I come home. I plan on doing the FMIC, Turbo back exhaust, Fuel pump internals, TIP and the Cobb AP. Then calling it a day for the car!

 I would add an upgraded bypass valve to that list. Stocker can be leaky. Car will move out pretty good with those mods.

yea the FMIC kit actually comes with a new bov/bpv. sorry i didnt mention that before haha.
I didnt think these were that quick even with the bolt-ons? i maybe wrong though.

I happen to think that my car is pretty zippy for what it is. The low gearing helps to make it feel faster than it really is in my opinion. I have heard that the AWD in the speed6 will make it lose a little more power as opposed to the speed3, which is obvious.

Basically, my opinion is that the speed3/6 is a great DD. They have good power stock, great interiors (for economy car) and good ride quality.

I wouldnt agree more! now that the snow is flying i can realy see what my car is like in the snow!!
Do you have a different bpv on your car now?

nope, my car is stock other than suspension and shifter

Yea im thinking of doing the twm stage 2 shifter on mine also. What suspension do you have?

Koni Sport Suspension…Yellow Shocks and Lowering springs. I have the jbarone shift plate. Cheap and works reasonably well. Also swapped out the rubber shifter bushings with metal alternatives.
