Custom FMIC? Anyone?

Anyone have experience doing a custom front mount intercooler set up?

I have a TMIC on my Speed6, and I’m just looking for thoughts/ideas on if this is worth it.

The stock TMIC has a 3PSI loss. For non-techs, that means if my turbo is putting out 18PSI, my engine only sees 15PSI. An aftermarket TMIC that costs over $700 gives only 1PSI loss, but I don’t want to spend $700. I found a perfectly suitable .5~1PSI loss FMIC and all of the necessary piping for around $250 total.

Apparently with only .5~1PSI loss in the FMIC set up, I can get a dyno proven 20HP/20TQ gain on my car. For $250, that doesn’t sound too bad… and, it would stop that pesky heatsoak on my TMIC sitting on my engine!

I have no experience in this install. Running piping would probably be pretty straight forward.

How about the Blow Off Valve? Wouldnt a flange of some sort have to be welded to the aluminum piping? Hard to get completed?

And also the windshield washer resevoir… what do you do for that? I know you can buy a universal one from Pepboys for like $15. Hard to move?

Any other thoughts/comments from people who have done this before or know any other “You should know…” items?

It will be the first mod on my car if I actually go through with it.

I don’t believe one thing you just wrote. Your theories are all off.

don’t shit up your nice car with POS parts.

especially when you clearly don’t know anything about cars.

I took the PSI loss numbers from the mazda6club forums. They aren’t my theories… LOL

A few members have done the custom FMIC with these parts, and they had great results. That’s probably why I got interested in doing it…

what about spool?

Again, picking the brains of mazda6club members as well as people reviewing their set ups, using the correct size IC and 2.25" tubing, lag isn’t an issue.

it would be a 28x7x2.5 intercooler with 2.25" piping.

Cory (bovice) had a nice fmic but not sure on the brand…Pm him and ask him about it

based on the questions that you are asking, if you try and do this yourself you’re just going to fuck up your car.

don’t believe them… the mazda6club sounds like probetalk to me.

God people on here are brutal…

However, $250 bucks for an entire fmic sounds too cheap. Are you counting clamps and silicone connectors and ect. Those parts alone can cost over $100.

It’s not like I’m a retarded monkey. I know how to do homework as well as read and learn. That is why I am posting up, in hopes of learning.

Thanks for knocking me down with negativity though, I appreciate it.

Have any input besides “Gonna break shit…” that may be useful/helpful?

not on ebay. these are clearly shitty china parts.

The small intercooler costs about $100. The piping kit with bead rolled edges and silocone connections costs about $150.

I checked the reviews of the intercooler and it seems decent. No bad reviews/leaking units/etc.

A DECENT IC CORE would cost more than 250 dollars.

Also, i’m not being negative, I’m being real.

You don’t ask:

And not be some sort of shitty ricer DIYer.

buy a different car to mod. There is a guy out this way who keeps dumping booku bux on his MS6 and it’s still slow.

Well, if you know all of the answers to DIY inquiries… why don’t you shine some of that brilliance down instead of being a prick… errr… “real” whatever. I’ve had the car for over a year without one modification. My last car had no “rice” mods, only performance bought items purchased with thought involved and research. Hence, this post.

Based on actual fact, I may not do a DIY FMIC. It may actually be a bad idea. Without asking, I won’t know. Don’t just say “You’re gonna break it” without a “… because…” and some answers. You just look like an idiot in return to someone seeking some information.

So, what do you do for the BOV? People welded a pipe/flange onto the piping where I saw pictures. Is there another way of doing it?

Because it’s not something i can impart to you on an internet post. You just don’t know what you’re doing. Doing research /= making a post on nyspeed.

The right way to get the BOV flange on there is to weld it. I can tell you 100 WRONG ways. Would you like to hear them?

Why do you need a bov? My .o2 would be to get a bigger turbo, keep your top mount and get a tune.

Stock BOV is probably mounted the the TMIC, though.

The car came with a BOV and it isn’t mounted on the TMIC. Its on a pipe, by itself.
And, what do you mean, why do I need one? It’s not an aftermarket “SWHOOOSH” stupid annoying non-purpose item. It’s the stock one.

What kind of mods is he doing? Any idea?

I’m not about making an 11 second car… and it is plenty peppy enough already. I just miss upgrading stuff and tinkering. It was fun to have the mod bug.
