FMIC PERFORMANCE

Okay guys, What do you guys think. Is there any difference is name brand to no-name. Is there a diff in BLITZ, GREEDY, HKS, APEXI. Or MEGAN, OBX, and brand X.

Personal experience would be great,

Thanks

Won’t make much difference if you’re just running stock setup (7-10psi).

Once you start getting serious with other parts of your motor, then you’ll
want to consider a quality unit.

Will be running 18psi, 22 tops. Already chaged turbo to a GT28RS. Just wanted some personal feed back of some of the differences. Basically wanted to justify the price in cheap/average/and $$$$.

Thanks for the input,

A bar and plate IC core from Bell or Spearco is your best bet for flow Eff. in a compact space. At that CMF rate, losses compared to a std. tube and fin are a fraction

i think you will be hard pressed to find actual dyno comparisons between a particular set up with a brand name FMIC and a unbranded FMIC.

many people have run the unbranded parts all over the US running huge HP on them… there are SR’s on fresh alloy running over 500hp through cheapo IC’s.

ultimatley it comes down to whether you are okay telling people you have an unbranded intercooler or not.

I sell lots of unbranded intercoolers, but i use an HKS kit.

… what is not known is the pressure drop across them… so your not providing the information needed for this person to make a qualified decision… whith a properly sized bell IC who knows what that ‘500hp’ could be … without a manometer test bed you won’t know the exact number but it is a certianty that a well made bar & plate has less loss and more cooling eff. then cheap one. like waise on a tube and fin.

an ‘unbranded part’ is usually a copy part, made with lower quality materials and consisting of lower quality parts. If you choose this route just be aware that you don’t get something for nothing and sometimes/allot of the time, spending the extra 20-40% is worth it in the end.

This is what you want…for Serious Business

I love showing this thing off

More pics on me site.

Looks cool, but does not help me to much with difference in intercoolers. What is it?

if you look at the main direction of the ‘fins’ they are up and down not side to side… this is a MUCh more effective way to move air quickly and to cool more air overall for a given size of IC… costs are higher but it’s a serious IC…

Mine is a Procharger unit. This one cost me about $490cad to my door
from eBay (from Hawaii).

You’re looking at about $500ish for a moderately sized unit (probablly
second hand).

AHHHHH, know I see it, missed that. Very COOL. Never actually seen those before.

IMO,
go for size, and have proper placement…IE in the airflow, and have proper air plates to force air through the IC. As for “pressure drop” who cares…if you have a car that is designed to make power, the “lag” is non existant when the car is already under boost…

you want efficiency…you want to cool the air charge down as much as you can…

WHAT??

Size DOES matter, too small and you restrict your air flow to the point where you can loose 50% of your potential HP. Too big and you run the risk of NOT coooling the air properly ( for a given volume air molecule density is lower in a larger space then a smaller one, the air molecules need to contact the IC surface to transferr heat energy. ) and running into a situation where your never in boost unless you launch at 5000rpm and have 800m in which to accelerate to fill up your IC pipeing and IC tank with charged air.

The right size IS important, for both useable power and cooling eff.

“for a given volume air molecule density is lower in a larger space then a smaller one, the air molecules need to contact the IC surface to transferr heat energy”

hmmm…so all large rooms have a slight vacum to them  ha ha

get the right size TURBO (big) and piping lag is not an issue…it is moving so much CFM its irrelevant…

NOW if we are drag racing…use some spray off the line… if we are road racing…then as I said holds true…

A ‘large room’ is not in the turbo - Intercooler - intake manifold flow diagram. And As such not applicable to the statment I made… and if you know enough to make the below remark then you know what I am referring to in my statment.

He’s got a turbo right now that is large so that is a fixed part of the equation, the only thing that is not a fixed entity is the size of the IC and the mounting style… I would put he V mounts I build up agaisnt any FMIC set up anyday and I’d put a properly sized IC up against your whimsical choice of Oversied IC’s.

Cmv07, Find out and read up on it for yourself as well. A very good book to start with and use throught your tunning life is a book by Corky Bell called ’ Maximum Boost ’ … I don’t have it handy here but if you do a search I’ve posted the ISBN for it, as well an older but bit more technical book ’ Turbochargers’ it’s ~ 18 years old but the principals and formulas havent changed and like I said it’s a bit more technical, this book is by Hugh MacInnes ISBN 0-895586-135-6, both are available via Chapters/Indigo.

had the book years ago…

its not gospel… over 9 years of racing I have made my own mind up on a few things…

screw lag… make power (for road racing) drag is another beast altogether

that is my gospel

Thanks for all the input guys, It’s good to have your input.

Then give this person the option to do the same, make up his own mind. It’s NOT gospel but they are both very very good books for the person who does not know or even who does know the basics of design and theory…

Personally I think your so far out in left field I’m amazed you make any power if you live by your ‘bigger is better, screw the factors of making an eff. IC system’ motto.

BAS, there is not doubt that ADAM’s car is most likely making more power than almost everyone on SON.

He does know what he’s talking about.

Why don’t we just leave this as it is unless anyone has any other relevant questions.

being ‘FAST’ has nothing to do with what’s being reffered to here…

giving sound advice , not this ‘get the biggest IC and Turbo you can find, close your eyes hope for the best…’ advice. That’s not helpful at all to anyone .

I’ve given the best advice I can, so I’m outta here. It’s up to the induvidual to make up thier mind HOW to prceed from this point.
