free up/reallocating RAM?

Is there a way I can free up RAM on my PC for use for programs?

Here’s the rundown:

AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0 ghz
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
Installed 8GB RAM

According to MS, Windows 7U in 32 bit mode will support up to 4GB ram. Under the control panel it’s showing me that I only have just under 3GB useable…

So under system resources, under physical memory tab this is what’s shown:

Hardware Reserved: 5129mb
In Use: ~740mb
Modified: 52mb
Standby: ~820mb
Free: ~1380mb

Available 2250mb
Cached: 1003mb
Total: 3063mb
Installed: 8192mb

My damn CAM program keeps freezing up(goes non responding) when trying to open any large files and I want to see if it’s a RAM issue first. So I guess I’m looking to see if there is any way I can maximize and free up any more of this RAM for use by programs???

You can cleanup what programs are running in the background via msconfig (google how to work with this) or by programs like CCleaner…but my guess is you’re going to need to go to 64-bit. To get the full 8GB…

Yeah the system WAS 64 bit when I bought it(built by Nick here) but my version of SW is only 32 bit and I didn’t feel like running a VM as I wasn’t sure how well the software would work in that under large renders. So I had Shady convert it to the 32 bit format, all well knowing I’d get screwed in the RAM dept. I wouldn’t mind maybe trying it as a 64bit os now, but now I don’t have a version of win7 ultimate in 64 bit :lol such a cluster fuck :lol

For the time being I kinda did a work around by converting the solidworks PRT files into STEP files and opening them up in that format. Seems to be working. Still slow but at least I can get the thing to open up.

I need better CAM software and a dedicated machine JUST for that software. FML :’( I would love to run Camworks but no post processor support for my machine and I am FAR from capable of writing my own code.

i can get u windows 8 ultimate 64 bit sir  or 7 if need be, ( sry not to get back to you about the cadi my buddys father has one in similar condition that he cant find any buyers for either)

Well I know this is a partial ram issue now. I was compiling a super fine equidistant tool path this evening for a tooling mold and the program tossed me some allocation errors. So for shits and giggles I went in and bumped my virtual memory allocation from 3.5gb to 10gb and I was able to compute the tool path and compile the Gcode

I think I definitely want to try going back to 64 bit. My question is if I am running these programs through a virtual machine(because theyre meant for 32bit OS), will the virtual machine still limit me to only 4gb ram access or is that limit not applicable in this setup? I’ve never used anything through a vm before so it’s all new to me.

Yeah, the 32-bit guest OS will still only see 4GB. Your only option is to go full blown 64-bit. Also, you cannot use a 64-bit guest on a 32-bit host.

Or, try to remove as much stuff as possible from running when you boot the machine up to free up every MB of memory you can using the methods I mentioned above.

Adam, was that machine re-formatted again? I remember when you brought it to my awhile ago we re-installed windows and I’m almost 100% positive it was 64 bit as I don’t own a single 32bit copy of windows :rofl

Regardless you are going to need to put 64 bit on it.
