My friend is looking to buy an S2000, preferably an AP1 since he isn’t looking to spend more than about $12k.

These cars hold there value. You can find a $12,000 on ebay but it will have higher miles. But check ebay
They are out there… but clapped out and ratty. 15-17 seemed like the hard floor for anything decent. IMO.
I guess it all depends on what you want out of it or are using it for… gl with the search.
You can buy an ap1 with ~80k miles for under 12k

All I find for the $12k range are modded ones or high miles $9K buys you a shitty S2K
I bought my 01 2 years ago for 9k. It was far from showroom condition but it was far from shitty. I’d rather buy mine for 9k than a same year one for 12k that’s in a little better shape. They’re all going to need wheel bearings because they suck and axle nuts redone as well as other stuff.
An 02+ will have a glass window instead of plastic.
If he gets one tell them to change the tranny and diff fluid right away

I do believe it’s just possible but rare… If one comes up locally it would be an easy flip in a month since it’s the perfect time of year.
Buy a nice Miata for half that and be extra slow.
If they ever come out with the S again, wonder if the s2k will drop in price
