b16a2 and type r are the same castings. Type R is hand ported from the factory and has lighter valvetrain and bigger cams. Gsr has higher compression bowl and ports flow good for torque. If the b16 head is so great then why didnt they use it on the GSR???
there is alot of debate and i guess its matter of opinion but all the bigname builders will tell you the gsr performs better and gives you a bump in compression.
Yea i was thinking a gsr , im just wondering if my block and tranny (which have about 138k on them) will hold up for a while .If it does n all ,my car prob would pull a gsr and be alot cheaper to do. I just like how reliable my car is right now and i dont want it to run like shit from making it a frankenstien motor. Which is kinda why i was interested in a fresh gsr with like 40 k on it.
getting a swap is no guarentees tho, we could do a compression test on the motor, and you would be replacing the headgasket either way, and theres no reason a basically stock ls/vtec would blow on you if its tuned properly or conservativly, which it would be
b16a2 heads go for like $250-$300 out here. those cams are good but $700? :x I’ve seen ITR heads go for that much.
Not to dog you but keep the head. Full GS-R swaps are $3200+ and you get ~180hp. All you MIGHT need (and is probably recommended) if you want to build is an LS block with less mileage and possibly a transmission. You can pick those up for very cheap…
If you plan on turboing your car in the future go for the GS-R idea, but $3200 just for a swap when you are already half way to an LSVTEC setup doesn’t make sense. Shit, if you spend just $2500 on your LSVTEC setup you can make very nice power if you find someone nice to help you with the tuning…
But I don’t know your goals with this car but paying $3k for a GS-R swap doesn’t make sense unless you’re planning on forced induction later on down the road.
well i am planning on a turbo set up but not for a year or soo but ls vtec would be fine for nowi guess.Only the bare head would go for 250-300$ so idk where u got that price from.
I cant find a stock complete b16a2 head for under like 400$ on honda tech, and those are with higher millage and some of them dont even have cams or camshafts, this head has roughly about 40-45k on it and comes with everything , crower camshafts that are almost new used for may b 1500 miles, intake manifold with ram intake on it, exhaust manifold, vtec distrubitor ,vtec solenoid. So if i do let this go, it aint gonna be for anywere near 250-300 unless its the bare head with nothing else, which i wouldnt part out anyways. I dont need to sell it , but if i get the right offer i wont turn it down so far 700$ seems pretty good to me so if i do sell it aint gonna be anything less than that.
But thanks rage87 for the info on the gsr and lsvtec shit , ive heard from alot of ppl now that gsrs are better to boost. I might just keep it and go with my poor mans frankenstien motor.
