1.8 B-series gets my vote.
seems like h22’s are never really worth the added hassle.
look for one on here. seems like they come up with some frequency… atleast it’ll be from someone with some idea of where it came from.
b16a is going to be the best bang for your buck. www.hmotorsonline.com sells complete swaps as well as long blocks. they have the best reputation and best prices, anywhere you see cheaper probably has more miles on them and not as great a warrenty. if you have money go b18c turbo, that’s what i’m doing and it should be a beast. and don’t buy from a junkyard they’re usually way overpriced and you’ll never get everything you need.
B16 or GSR swap is same amount of work(very little). if you can get a GSR for the same price as a B16, do it. hint: you probably wont. expect to pay about a grand more for a GSR swap. i would save up for the GSR swap, but then buy the B16, spend the extra $200-$300 for one with an LSD trans, then have $700 to spend on stuff that you should do while the engine/trans is on a rack and not in the car. new timing belt, water pump, clutch, flywheel, decent shifter, and ES shift stabilizer bushings. should leave roughly a hundred for an obd1 conversion harness since OBD1 motors are more readily available and much cheaper than obd2, and you have the added benefit of using your choice of obd1 tuning software down the road.
also, IMO, B16 is the better motor, despite its 11ft/lb penalty. price has a large part to do with it, as does the normal intake manifold and perfect rod/stroke ratio for turbo.
This is going into my daily driver and it has to stay street legal. What I eventually plan on doing is putting my d16 into a hatch and boosting it and making that an ongoing project.
So i’m thinking a b16 with some bolt ons would be good for a street legal daily.
be honest with yourself about what you can do budget-wise…if you’re hard for cash, and we can see that you are, and this is a DD to go with a boosted D-series project just swap in an LS - when it blows it will be much cheaper to replace and you can avoid throwing your project money into your DD
If money isn’t an issue (but it is) then a GSR would be the way to go fo sho
LS’s are rated at what—like 140 hp? I don’t want to do a swap just to do a swap I want to do a swap and have a noticeable gain in h.p…a d16y8 (current engine) has about 127 hp…so with the addition wieght an LS has I don’t think it would be worth it to do an LS swap because I do not plan on turboing this motor in the future
From what I found most of the b16’s are cheaper than a b18c1’s
Like I said before though I don’t have the money right now ( F College-too damn expensive) but when I do if I find a complete GSR swap for a good price I’ll probably go that route but if not I’ll probably just get a b16 and just do some bolt ons and what not
If my numbers above with the ls and d16 hp are wrong let me know
i dont know if your numbers are wrong… but you are certainly wrong in thinking there is not difference in performance between the LS and any d16.
it seems like you’re on a budget… i think LS is the way to go. sure its a little less power than the vtec motors but you get your power in a much lower RPM range and its much more useable in a daily driver application…
besides, a GSR/B16 isnt going to be the fastest DD in the world either. do the LS, save your pennies… it will be fun and you can always upgrade later.
I would take an LS over a B16 anyday. If you can LS with a b16 tranny but my brother had an ls and was running 14.7~14.6 with an intake header exhaust. The B16 makes a little more power than a sohc vtec and same torque, LS is a much better bang for the buck IMO but GSR is the definate way to go good luck.
yea but i’m not turboing the swap…the the numbers with a turbo not really relivant here…an ls swap only has about 15 more horsepower than my car has right now…the thing i am thinking about is… is 15 more horespower and the extra wieght worth doing a swap at all??? I am…u are all right… on a budget bbbuutttt I’d rather save the extra money and do a gsr swap
I just want a daily driver that doesn’t run a 16.6 like mine does now and is street legal
And yes I want to do a swap into my d/d and boost my d in a pos hatch
And the reasoning behind this is…
I would love to just get a project car and swap and boost it bbuutt i’m tired of my daily driver having no balls what so ever so if I could I would just boost my d/d but thats not too reliable and I wouldn’t pass inspection legally and I’ve never really heard of a fast all motor d series so thats why i’m doing a swap…and if I have a left over engine I think it’d be fun to throw it in a hatch and boost it…and with the project i’m not looking for big numbers I’m just planning on making a modern day rat rod…primered hatch…some gold gsr fat fives, d16y8, 14b, dsm 450’s, custom i/c piping, vitara pistons…it’d be a fun lil hatch
Obvious choice here is an LS K20 swap. good reliable engines found in the RSX and Civic Si Hatches '02-'05. So a rather new engine and could find one pretty cheap. I know I enjoyed my K20A3 Si when I had it.
you want your dd to have more balls just turbo it you can get a d-series turbo kit for real cheap specially with like a 14b or something that size and it will still be street legal. No use doing a swap if you dont plan on doin anything with it. Or you can just sell your car and buy a teggy if you dont like the sohc. but in my opinion you wanna little kick in your ride slap a small turbo (14b) on it run round 6-8 psi with an all stock motor and a good ecu and tune and you will be happy with it
