Gun Crew: Recommend me a 30-06

I’m a big fan of the remington 700s. Like previously stated very reliable rifle and a great performer. If price is the factor, check around NYfirearms.com see if you can find one used in your price range.

From what I’ve heard/read. The 770 is a good price, but people don’t rate it well. I don’t know 700’s, but I’ve heard good about them. I personally own a Savage in .300 Win Mag and I can’t complain. Most of my hunting buddy’s and family have the Savage 30-06 for hunting and swear by them. I also have heard the new “Axis” gun is good too. If you can wait until mid September when the deals go on at Dick’s or Sports Authority, I’d hold out. Usually priced well at that time of the year.(If memory serves, $289-$329 with generic 3x9x40 scope) Other than that, I’d say go for the Savage. It seems to have a good following.

I have a savage 30-06 and have no complaints.

Well the decision is made. I just found out yesterday at work that we are getting a 3% cost of living raise in our April 4th paycheck that will be pro-rated back to March 5th… which means I should have the cash moniez for JVG’s. So come April 4th (or possibly sooner if we get the raise earlier) I will finally have my 30-06!!!
Thanks for the help guys!

Awesome! I know he’s on vacation right now for a week, but that just means it’ll definitely be there when you have the monies.

Of if he wants it sooner I can get it out of the safe and hold the money for jon until he gets back.

I literally just finished going through that rifle a few weeks ago(cleaning/inspection). Well worth the money he’s asking and I would have bought it if we didn’t have one here already.

It will actually work out nicely b/c it will be at least Friday til I have the money… and thats only if we happen to get the pro-rated check early. Otherwise it will be April 4th when we get it.

I’d much rather spend the extra money for a Remington 700. Much better action, proven in several different countries. Sure, it’s cheap, but when it comes to guns, it’s more of a “buy once, cry once” thing.

we all already know that. just saw that earlier and knew the OP has mentioned that gun in that caliber.

An other amazing deal.

Yea, I just saw that one as well. But I’m probably going to stick with the Remington. I know Remingtons are great quality… ad I’ve heard good things about the Savages, but I’ve never really shot one so I’d rather stick with what I’m somewhat accustomed to.

Bob @ Firefly Firearms has excellent prices on a lot of stuff. If for some reason you don’t like JVG’s, Bob could find you something.

I was doing quite a bit of research and the Remington 700 was one of my favorites… just a little above my price range. So JVG’s should be perfect. The ONLY thing I MAY have to do is to somehow get the barrel outside coated since the bright stainless will cause some undesired glares in the woods. Otherwise I think it is going to be perfect. Cossey (or anyone who knows the rifle well), do you have the specs on the BSA scope? I’m just trying to get an idea if it will be the scope I’m looking for.

It’s not bright. The barrel and action on his rifle are shot blasted. It’s a matte finish.

ok… it was hard to tell in the pic and going by the fact that it was stainless I assumed it was a “glossy” type finish. If its shot blasted then it should be fine.

Yeah there is absolutely no glare off this rifle EXCEPT for the diamond ground finish on the bolt, but that is negligible. This is a great rifle, has been well taken care of, and was just gone through. I also don’t think he mentioned that I put the stiffer firing pin/cocking spring in the bolt assembly.

I was almost going to buy it myself about a year ago when he was first inclined to sell it but we already have a remington 30-06 here(as well as a 25-06) so it was kind of moot.

The scope on it is decent enough for hunting purposes. If you’re planning to shoot competitively with this(which you can with some minor upgrades) then a better scope is always a must. But for what you seem to want to do with it it will suit you just fine.

yea, I’m not looking to pick off a deer at 1000 yards… lol. But wouldn’t mind getting the better range than a shotgun or something lower powered.
