Have Fios? Its about to get more awesome...

Which router? My parents have an older one, so I had them send a “new” one. I got it and it was all banged up and scuffed. I couldn’t get it to work so I sent it back.

TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND

You can only remove the Verizon router if you have Fios just for internet though. The Verizon router is needed for the digital cable guide info. I dropped home TV a while ago when I realized we were getting everything we watched from usenet and since then the Verizon router has been sitting in a box downstairs.

So yeah, I’m ready for what ever Verizon wants to send me for bandwidth.

Does that VZ router you have spare, have gig ports?

No, I think it’s the one below the absolute latest. It has wireless N but just 100 ports. They do offer one with gig ports now though.

Yeah that’s what I’m looking for…Hopefully they give me one with the new FiOS install.

I think that’s what my dsl is lol

Edit: just checked and it’s 20/20 lol

Don’t “hope”, make sure it’s requested so the installer has one on the truck. You’ve got a lot more power to ask for things as a new customer than you will 6 months from now when you’re locked into a contract.

I’ll keep that in mind when I schedule the install and during the install. I believe the first 12 months are no contract (please correct me if I’m wrong).

I think you’ve got it backwards. The first 12 months are under contract. At the time they did my install to get everything installed for free you had a 12 month contract but they would lock your intro price for 18.

It’s a pretty involved install to tap fiber at the pole and run it into your house. I doubt they’ve suddenly decided to do it with no obligation. The installer who did mine was there 4 or 5 hours (ONT in garage, 3 digital boxes in various rooms in the house). If I bailed a month later that’s a huge loss for Verizon.

I went to a fios training back a few years ago…probably 2007 or so.

At that time they said the cost involved with each install was $2500.

Yeah my parents house has 5 HD Set top boxes and 3 network runs done by verizon. ONT was already there from my grandparents. I felt really bad for the guy running the Cat5e cause he really hadn’t done it before.

Oh so you gots the hookup? Promo codes! FREE INTERWEBS! j/k

but yeah I believe that number…it’s a shitty job that seems to always be understaffed. In college they were always recruiting installers.

Which is why they ran out of money and stopped building into new areas…

Running fiber to each home is expensive another reason you won’t see this in the city of Buffalo forever…If they touch the city they have to write the whole place.

its in the city. i had it on huntington, and most of university heights on the south side of main is ran.

Except I believe they cannot sell TV in the city since they don’t have a franchise, I know my installer told me certain city parts near me (live off Eggert near Main) could get internet for Fios. Ditto on the install being involved, my house was a pain in the ass, Carbonfiberhooded can vouch for that when he did my dish install 3yrs or so back.

Yea, it was just internet. Which is fine, I just use netflix/hulu/antenna anyways

Not entirely accurate.

You do need the Fios router if you have there TV service with there receivers. Largely due to the MOCA tie ins and the way there Ondemand system works. You can however install your own router and put the Actiontec into a Bridge mode.

There are lots of posts covering this on DSLReports, here are some other links too…

Also are you sure that is your model? I could have sworn I talked you into the Dlink Dir825

I went with the cheaper one of the two you suggested.

Not sure if I’ve had to reboot it since the day I put it in so I’d say it was a good choice. When your reboot schedule is “when ever the power goes out” I think you’re doing well with anything computer related.
