Ok, having talked to someone about this I’m prett sure it’s going to be
Nissan dealer, but would anyone be able to confirm this?
I really don’t have access to a car so I really can’t just go to a junkyard
and pick one up (not to mention it’s such a PITA to remove). This bolt
broke and another one is still on the control arm (however I sort of fear
it’s going to break too).
The bolt head uses a 19mm socket and the nut uses a 17mm socket.
The bolt one of those that uses a notched washer that lines up with a
grove in the bolt (see pictures).
If you don’t know what the rear Toe Rod is or what the bolt looks like here
are some pictures:
Edit: The bolt pictured above is from the other control arm that came out without breaking.
So the washers/bolts have to line up in a certain way to affect alignment?
As for cost, I don’t mind paying a few $$$ for some bolts. Better then
trying to fight the same bolt on a rusted parts car.
And yea Adam, I’m gonna get new ones for both sides.
Will call up 401 Nissan today. Thanks guys…
Another quick question. Would there be any additional handling/stiffness
achieved if I box the toe rod as well as the traction rod? (And by box I
mean welding a plate on the under side open end - to form a tube if you will)
Since the control arms only see loads placed along thier length, boxing them in may not net much of a benefit. It will also add more unsprung weight to the suspension which has negative effects on handling.[/quote]
So what major advantage do the tubular aftermarket arms have (such as
the ones from SPLParts)?
Or is the only advantage of those (SPL) arms is the pillowball?
Just something I wondered because my dad has access to welding
equipment at his shop so I figured I get the stuff boxed.
Well I got off the phone with a Nissan parts person. Here’s what I was
quoted on the parts I need:
$12.73 for Bolt
$12.73 for Washer (Yes you read it right, $12.73 for a washer)
$3.75 for Nut
This is just for one set. On the rear suspension there are 4 of these so
I’m looking at about $130CAD for a full set (after tax).
Talk about highway robbery.
This was over the phone after looking at a picture of the parts # through a
fax he sent me (which was somewhat hard to read). Hopefully there is
a misunderstanding here.
Well, I tried Napa but as expected, they didn’t have it. I went down the
road to a place specializing in Bolts/Nuts and they didn’t have it. Guess
it’s a special nut/bolt/washer.
I needed 4 of everything so total came out to $115.50 (after tax)
Oh well, their delivery was excellent. I put an order in, was told next
day by 10am and sure enough it was there by 10am. I accidentally
ordered 2 of everything (some confusion was involved) instead of 4
and was told to come back at 3:30 for the other 2 set. Sure enough
it came in on time again.
Either it’s standard practice or just good service.
You definitely don’t want to waste time and effort getting parts like that from the wreckers. Stuff like this happens and it’s much nicer to have the piece of mind of having new hardware in a vital location like that in your car than another 12 year old rusted out re-used part that you spent 2 or 3 hours retrieving from a dead car at the junkyard.
That’s just my opinion but I guess it all depends on the time you have and your budget. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to the dealer on this one.
