HELP: Broken rear toe rod bolt : where to buy replacement?

Ok, having talked to someone about this I’m prett sure it’s going to be
Nissan dealer, but would anyone be able to confirm this?

I really don’t have access to a car so I really can’t just go to a junkyard
and pick one up (not to mention it’s such a PITA to remove). This bolt
broke and another one is still on the control arm (however I sort of fear
it’s going to break too).

The bolt head uses a 19mm socket and the nut uses a 17mm socket.
The bolt one of those that uses a notched washer that lines up with a
grove in the bolt (see pictures).

If you don’t know what the rear Toe Rod is or what the bolt looks like here
are some pictures:

Edit: The bolt pictured above is from the other control arm that came out without breaking.

Is it a bolt for the eccentric bushing? If not, just replace it with something of the same length.

Same length yes but you also have to have the same shear point. (Strength Rating)

Go to Nissan or call them up its like 2 - 5 bucks for that nut and bolt.

Get them to order it in and be done with it man.

Heck while your at it order 2 one for each side.

So the washers/bolts have to line up in a certain way to affect alignment?

As for cost, I don’t mind paying a few $$$ for some bolts. Better then
trying to fight the same bolt on a rusted parts car.

And yea Adam, I’m gonna get new ones for both sides.

Will call up 401 Nissan today. Thanks guys…

Another quick question. Would there be any additional handling/stiffness
achieved if I box the toe rod as well as the traction rod? (And by box I
mean welding a plate on the under side open end - to form a tube if you will)

Thanks,

Since the control arms only see loads placed along thier length, boxing them in may not net much of a benefit. It will also add more unsprung weight to the suspension which has negative effects on handling.[/quote]

So what major advantage do the tubular aftermarket arms have (such as
the ones from SPLParts)?

Or is the only advantage of those (SPL) arms is the pillowball?

Just something I wondered because my dad has access to welding
equipment at his shop so I figured I get the stuff boxed.

The main thing about SPL’s Rods are they are Lightweight and they have
a solid pillowball mount instead of a warn out 15 year old piece of rubber.

Well I called up 401 Dixie Nissan from work today.

Me: “I’m looking for a certain part for a 92 Nissan 240sx”

Parts person: “Ok”

Me: “It’s a bolt, nut and washer for the rear toe rod arm. It’s the bolt that goes on the subframe end”

Parts person: “You mean like a stabalizer bar?”

Me: “No it’s a control arm. It’s part of the multilink rear suspension”

Me: “It’s an eccentric bolt”

… searches in their database …

Parts person: “You’re gonna have to fax us a picture or something”

Me: “I have a picture on my website if you want to take a look, I can give you the address”

Parts person: “…”

Parts person: “Maybe it’s best for you to come down here or fax us the part and picture”

:pat:

Welp so I gave up trying to explain it over the phone. Will have to wait till Tue. to drop by the dealer or fax him the part.

Well I got off the phone with a Nissan parts person. Here’s what I was
quoted on the parts I need:

$12.73 for Bolt
$12.73 for Washer (Yes you read it right, $12.73 for a washer)
$3.75 for Nut

This is just for one set. On the rear suspension there are 4 of these so
I’m looking at about $130CAD for a full set (after tax).

Talk about highway robbery.

This was over the phone after looking at a picture of the parts # through a
fax he sent me (which was somewhat hard to read). Hopefully there is
a misunderstanding here. :frowning:

Go in and talk to the guy, I know at Alta Richmond Hill I can usually negotiate a better price with Faras (sp). Good luck.

Man, that’s nuts!

You can probably re-use the washers. I really see no need to replace them unless they were warped or damaged in any way.

I have only one set of nut/washer/bolt that is in good usable condition.
Another set is intact, however it was damaged partially during removal.

And two are broken, and practically unusable.

At most I need 3, but I dunno if I should shell out that extra $30 for
another set even though one seems perfectly fine.

Go to UAP NAPA and get the washers and bolts.

Well, I tried Napa but as expected, they didn’t have it. I went down the
road to a place specializing in Bolts/Nuts and they didn’t have it. Guess
it’s a special nut/bolt/washer.

Anywho, I got my parts from Nissan:

Washer: $12.73ea (#55227-35F10)
Bolt: $9.41ea (#55226-35F10)
Nut: $2.97ea (#01225-00072)

I needed 4 of everything so total came out to $115.50 (after tax)

Oh well, their delivery was excellent. I put an order in, was told next
day by 10am and sure enough it was there by 10am. I accidentally
ordered 2 of everything (some confusion was involved) instead of 4
and was told to come back at 3:30 for the other 2 set. Sure enough
it came in on time again.

Either it’s standard practice or just good service.

For that price i would be serving them up with a glass of Champaigne.

Well it is a little better then I expected. The first parts person I talked with
said the Bolt and Nut were $12.73 each.

But hey, what are you gonna do. This isn’t just an ordinary
bolt/nut/washer. It’s used for rear alignment and I did try other places.

Read my original post:

personally i would have looked for a better solution than to spend over 100 bucks on 4 nuts and bolts

Like?

You definitely don’t want to waste time and effort getting parts like that from the wreckers. Stuff like this happens and it’s much nicer to have the piece of mind of having new hardware in a vital location like that in your car than another 12 year old rusted out re-used part that you spent 2 or 3 hours retrieving from a dead car at the junkyard.

That’s just my opinion but I guess it all depends on the time you have and your budget. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to the dealer on this one.

Couldn’t Agree with you more.
