help with 98 TA with monsoon radio

Ok…my one friend she has a 98 TA with the monsoon radio in it.
Hear driver side rear speaker is blown.
Does she have to get a speaker from the dealer or can she buy one to put in there…Best buy and circuit city told her she HAD to have a monsoon speaker…I thought that sounded little odd…I have never done anything with domestics so i wasnt sure…but speakers are speakers…- and + wire going to them

they can run any speaker in there, but it would be best to run a monsoon if they wish to preserve the sound and integrity of the factory system. Replacing both rear speakers will be the best bet, to keep the sound equal. however if the speaker is crossedover, that’s all the new speaker will play. For example if the rear speaker is crossed over to act as a mid range, then having a nicer speaker with a built-in tweeter would be over kill. What the guys at Best Buy or Circuit are afraid of, is if the factory speaker is either 2,4, or 8 ohm and their speaker is 4 ohm. It just changes the load on the amplifier, and they are afraid it could ruin the amp. It’ll be fine, just may not have the same sound characteristics, the rears may be louder, or quieter than they were before. I’ve done it before on both Monsoon and other brand cars with premium sound systems.

ok thanks…She wasnt sure if you could.
Any recomendations on a speaker to use…or how much does that rear dirver seat speaker cost for the actual monsoon one.

Might want to check with Pewter to see if he has anything around.

If you stick with the factory headunit and amp you need to run a factory speaker, or at least an aftermarket one designed to operate at the right ohm rating. I’m pretty sure typical aftermarket stuff is designed for 4 ohm and the whole Monsono system is at 2. It might be the other way around, stereo stuff is not my field. I just remember from my '99 Z/28 w/ Monsoon that if you want to go aftermarket you pretty much have to change everything.

Also, what speaker do you mean by the “driver’s side rear.” The TAs had more speakers than the Camaros, and even those had 6 (doors, sail panels, hatch) speakers. In the Monsoon some of the stock speakers were a mid-bass so you have to keep that in mind too.

the driver side rear seat…not the speaker in the way back in the hatch…the middle speaker

On a Camaro that’s the “mid bass” channel. It only gets sent the lower frequencies, though I’m not sure if its the same for the TAs. I’d guess it is though.

T/A’s have what they consider “mid bass drivers” in the rear seat positions. The reason they probably don’t want to replace it is because first off the Monsoon stereos had all 2 ohm speakers and most replacement speakers are 4 ohm which would make them really quiet compared to the other speakers and second the rears were crossed over to basically work as subs. A nice upgreade would be either Audiobahn or Digital Audio 6.5" mid bass drivers. They’re both made by Audiobahn and both speakers are 3 ohm which WILL NOT HURT the factory amps. They also won’t be much of a volume difference. If not Pewter should have a factory speaker laying around.

i have what u need, just bring the old one & we will match it $10

ok…I will let her know…I am sure she will be happy with that.
Thanks

or get me the owms off the back & i can ship it

ok…so next question
is that trim piece easy to get off…I havnt looked at it yet.
is there anything hidden you have to undo or is it pretty straight forward like door panels.

it aint to bad,if u pull off specker cover,u should beable to get out the 4 7mm bolts

oh ok…so that speaker cover comes off itself…I was figuring that entire trim piece would have to be removed…

Nope… should be able to get it just takin’ off the cover like p00per said.

All I had to do was take the speaker grille piece off with mine. It’s a pain trying to get the bolts out without dropping one but that’s the worst part. Should take no more than 10 minutes.
