Help with title issues? Unrecoverable title

So someone picked up a barn find 82 Suzukimatic 400 for a family member. Seller at the time said it was their deceased mothers bike and being that it sat for (at least) 8 years they had no idea where the paperwork was - however they would look into ordering it through the DMV…

That was April 2010.

The bike still sits in my garage (i got it running well for under $150, brought the chrome to life, revived the brakes, etc, just needs paint & tires now) and the wife wants to take it out to learn on.

I’ve chased the buyer of the bike for more then 6 months to do something about a title, but shes utterly useless. I’ve read through the DMV site and a few other sites seemingly to no avail.

Anyone know what my options are (other then parting it out)?

I don’t even know the name or address of previous titled owner.

i hate when stuff like this happens.

I had to get rid of a rust free 81 monte carlo as a parts car to someone who cut it up into an asphalt oval car, because of a double signed pa salvage title. (long story short, asked if title was clean, they said yes, drove an hr + truck and trailer to find the titel issues, bought it anyways 500$)

The dmv basically told me to find the previous owner, no help :frowning:

Wouldn’t this fall under an abandoned law? I’m not up on title laws but I thought if a vehicle was abandoned for a certain time period then it would receive new/amended title?

if the bill of sale is from 2 years or more ago then they may be able to do somthing for you.

yea i was tinking of your adventures but being newer then '72 ruled out the options there were on the boat. :confused:

trust me dan, ive debated it. if current title efforts run to a complete dead end (after this thread basically) I’m gonna go that route…

If the person you bought it off of was the relative of the owner, and the owner is deceased, you might be able to get them to get the title:

You might have to do some of the leg work for them and try and just make it easy for them if they aren’t really willing to help.

yea, apparently they arent acknowledging they had a bike now - so Im told by the woman who bought it last year. I cant necessarily blame em, it was cheap and over a year ago but blah.

do you have a friend with a shop? i think they can do somthing like a mechanics lean if you trust them
