Historic car ice races March 1, 2008

The Central New York Ice Racing Association will hold it’s inaugural vintage car ice racing event near Watkins Glen NY on Saturday March 1st. The target lake is Waneta Lake, just northeast of the village of Watkins Glen. The first two events like this were put on by A.M.E.C. on Lake George. Take a look at last year’s event.

Anyone here have a decent looking '75 or older classic car they’d like to bring out and have some fun with?

Tempting if I had a car ready. Of course the only way I’d consider it with a classic would be enclosed trailer to and from the event (to avoid the Salt) and then a very thorough cleaning on a lift afterwards.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this because they are going to be running regular (non-vintage) races that weekend too. If there isn’t enough ice on the lake, the backup plan is to run on the ground at Black Rock Speedway (in Dundee, which is like halfway between Watkins Glen and Penn Yan)

Correct, but the vintage cars will run separately in their own heats. Here is the proposed course if the event has to be run on the frozen snow covered ground at Black Rock Speedway.

Should be a great event either way!

That looks cool!

hmm, tempting…I’ve been wanting to run on snow/ice all winter.

Have to follow this thread…

Be nice to get out and chew up some ice.

Is there an updated link for the info? The link above doesn’t work.

OP didn’t link it right:

If there is a non-vintage class, I’ll be there. Been trying to do an ice race for the last two winters, but the weather keeps failing to cooperate

Frozen ground is the way to go IMO. If they flood it evenly it should be pretty consistent and smooth with less depth required.

Maybe I should stop being lazy and cheap and replace my struts…

Here’s the info

It’s been so damn cold, it would be nice if Waneta were actually frozen!

there is

Sorry about that, I fixed the link in post #1.

Mike

I’m going to lose. 2 snow tires and 2 all seasons, lol.

But I’ll be the sexiest little e30 out there, damnit!

With all due respect, E30’s are hard enough to control with proper winter tires let alone all seasons…

I am also happy to report that CNYIRA even has a backup plan if mother nature doesn’t cooperate with enough ice on Waneta Lake. They have arranged this road course to be run at Black Rock Speedway in nearby Dundee, NY. This will be on a snow covered frozen ground. Nice!

Appreciate the heads up, but I’m well aware

An update from the mailing list . . . no ice, but there will be a “euro rallycross” in Dundee (halfway between Penn Yan and Watkins Glen)

CNYIRA will be holding a Euro style Rallycross this Saturday March 1’st at
Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, NY. For caged (menard) cars and also street
legal cars. The street legal cars will run with each other with a very
strict no touch rule being enforced. The caged cars will run with a slightly
looser no touch rule. Meaning a very minor touch can be okay, but something
that causes any damage will lead to expulsion. (OUCH!)

If you plan on participating I suggest you go to
http://groups.google.com/group/NYIceRacers/files?hl=en
Then click on the membership form and also the driver event form. Please
print these out, fill them out and bring them with you.

If there are enough drivers we will also have open classes in both caged and
street legal cars.

If you already sent forms in for the vintage race and will be running in the
Rallycross, I will have those forms with me, so you will be covered. If you
sent in for the Vintage and won’t be running with us, then we will just use
that money to pay for the rest of us. No, don’t worry, I will be sending
that stuff back to you after Saturday.

Unstudded street legal tires only please.

Here is the race schedule for Saturday March 1’st.

8:00 to 9:30 Registration
9:00 to 10:00 Tech Inspection
10:00 Driver’s meeting and Grid announcments
10:15 Mandatory Course Walk

10:20 The racing begins

We will be playing some of this by ear, but I think the way it might work
will be something like this.

We may try 4 or 6 cars at a time in sort of a bracket arrangement. Something
like the first 2 cars in group one will race against the first 2 cars from
group 2 and then the last 2 cars race against the last two of the other
group or something like that.

Don’t worry, whatever we do it will be fun and fair with emphasis on maximum
seat time.

You should also be aware that there is one small part of the course where
there will be a no passing rule for that area. The historic significance of
that is that sixty years ago when cars ran on the 6.6 mile street circuit at
Watkins Glen there was also an area where no passing was allowed.

Anyway, bring a friend because there will also be an open class for caged
cars and also street legal cars.

Directions to Black Rock:

OUTLAW SPEEDWAY, LLC. - DUNDEE, NY :: DIRT TRACK STOCK CAR RACING
<– has nothing to drive but will be there to watch. Should be exciting

If A.M.E.C.'s ice races on Cossayuna Lake get cancelled because of today’s snowfall, I will be there competing in the Euro-Rallycross with my '93 Nissan Sentra SE-R.

Hmmm…dilemma. I run a caged car but I definitely would want to run in a no touch class. And I run rally tyres…not street legal.

Are the rally tires unstudded? Maybe that would be OK  Is the car itself street legal?

I found some photos from past similar events, looks awesome!

It was 5 degrees last night, there’s gotta be some serious ice out there now.
