How the state could save money

So no to say that i am for or against anything, i was just looking for information felt i should share my findings.

This was the newest information i could find,

At the end of the year (2004), state prisons held a total of 1,274,600 inmates, 249,400 of which were held for non violent, drug offenses. Federal prisons held a total of 93,751 inmates as of september 2006, just more than half of the entire prison’s population. According to the American Corrections Association, the average cost per inmate per day is $67.55 that totals out to around $6,149,144,050 per year.

Now like i said im neither for or against drugs, but this seems like an awfully big chunk of change we’re spending to keep people who “sold a plant”, in jail. Even for people that get caught with harder drugs maybe some sort or public works project?

anyone have thoughts on this?

i got my info from

a lot of people who “sold a plant” are allowed to do something, which you’re obviously not familiar with…and thats called “plea bargain”.

Your “non-violent, drug offenses” are people with large amounts of serious drugs, or repeat offenders.

This argument isn’t anything new.

People in prisons, are there for more than a year. They didn’t just “sell a plant”. Plus the recidivism rate is so high, who cares? They will just be back in 6 months anyways.

most large amounts of drugs guys are usually high executives… who are white… who have the money to deal with drugs such as coke, and who aren’t in jail

about 95% of the people who are in jail for drugs are dealing with “petty” drugs not worth much street value

I know a way the state could save $146,000,000,000+ a year but I would probably get fired if anyone found out I blew the proverbial whistle

how about just kill all the child molesters and rapists?

keep the darker than average in prison.

:word: fire up old sparky

i have been working at wende prison for the past couple of days putting up a temporary congical visit trailor, thats right a temporary congical visit trailor. they are putting this up because the old building was starting to show its age so they tore it down and they are building a new one. this thing is equipped with a big screen tv, playstation, a porch, bbq set, a/c, and pretty much whatever else you could think of. i think this is a little bit of money that nys could off saved.

That temporary shelter is probably not that much money. Petty things like that don’t matter against a big budget too much.

well yes and no. NYS 3 strikes rule caries mandatory prison for three felony convictions. I’m not sure what the grade felony cut off is, but it absolutly contributes to the prision population. Enough that if pot was legal it would make a significant dent? No idea, maybe not

I just saw some numbers on this, the number of people in the US that are in prison is staggering compared to other countries. I can’t decide if this is a good thing or not. lol I can think of about a dozen CEOs that should be in prison.

i have always thought that a public works project would be a great idea, take the non violent ones who will be released somewhat soon, lojak them with ankle bracelets and work them till they are released. then repeat with next group.

maybe if these guys didnt have tv in their cells and all kinds of social bonds with other inmates they wouldnt take the chance of committing another crime and possibly coming back.

There should be absolutely no reason anyone would want to go to prison, it should be a place that you never want to step foot in.

I guess when you’re impoverished though three hots and a cot sounds pretty good.
