How To: Make a custom front splitter out of ABS plastic

another write up from myspecv.com that i did.

bought the plastic from great lakes plastic over on broadway i think for 58 bucks for the 1/8" 4x8 sheet.

been thinking of the idea since last summer and finally got around to it since i take my bumper and lip off for the winter anyway. so i made a front splitter out of abs plastic instead of buying a carbon fiber one for 300 bucks

what i used:

  1. 4’x8’ sheet of 1/8 inch abs plastic (need a lot less than that) (50 bucks)
  2. My lip to trace out my design
  3. silver sharpie marker
  4. jigsaw
  5. 1" self tapping screws
  6. nuts,bolts,washers
  7. sandpaper (to clean up the edges)
  8. Drill/Drill bits
  9. Sockets/socket wrench

Total Cost: ~60 bucks

the lip is a Syndicate Kustomz World Challenge Front lip that they no longer make anymore so hopefully the splitter will take more impact than the lip so i dont crack it pulling in somewhere

first i figured out what i wanted to do for the design and shape of the splitter.

then i figured out how far out i wanted it to stick out from the front of my lip. its about 2 inches

then i took my lip and set it on the plastic and measured 2 inches from the edge of the plastic to the back part of the lip on the sides.

then i traced around the edge of the lip with a silver sharpie marker and kind of slid the lip back after i got to the end of the side to keep the same line going for the remaining 2 inches

heres what it looks like placed where it will sit once its attached. before it is cut

next get a big table or something to set the sheet of plastic on and trim out a few inches away from the line that you want to cut on the splitter to make it easier on yourself when you are cutting out the final shape.

(Don’t have pics of in between cutting)

start cutting along the line you drew and go slow enough to where you wont slip and let the jigsaw go out of control so you don’t mess up.

then sand down the edges a little so it isn’t as rough from the jigsaw.

place the splitter under the lip so you can line it up how you want.

drill holes from the top with the splitter lined up so you can bolt it onto the lip.
insert bolts washers and nut to hold in place. then go around and tighten once all of the bolts are in.

(i used self tapping screws on the front because i could reach in to get a nut on the bolt because of the way the lip is designed. i inserted these through the bottom portion once the other nuts and bolts were in place to secure the front section to the lip more securely.)

Final Product.

and now you have a custom one of a kind splitter

will update with pics on the car once i put my lip back on the bumper.

ask or pm me if you have questions

So looking down at it from the top the silver “unfinished” area is part of the original facia?

are you referring to the lip? thw whole lip is carbon fiber. well most of it anyway. the pass side cracked into 4 peices so i fiberglassed it back together and where it says NISMO, that is the original cf showing through that was clearcoated when the rest of the lip was painted

Looks good- nice job

Advice: create a Wear Strip / Skid Plate

I would glue (hot glue or something removable) or affix another strip of nylon/plastic directly under the forward most section of your splitter… basically double up the plastic.

You will grind the splitter on driveways and the road. Guaranteed. Protect it by making a sacrificial section/layer under it.

good call man didnt think of doing that at all. as long as i hit the splitter rather than the lip i will be happy. thats the main thing i was going for. ill think about doin that tho

Looks good.

Looks nice, and  to another good DIY thread

That looks good but I’m not 100% sure a piece of ABS will soak up enough impact to not crack the lip, or at least unseat the lip from the bumper. It will def. transfer the impact to a larger area of the lip, hopefully it won’t crack. How is the lip fastened to the bumper?

i think you went a little overkill on the screws, haha.

the lip is held on the bumper with 10 bolts that go around the perimeter of the bumper. its on there pretty good. well the plastic bends a good amount fairly easily so it will give more than a cf lip will. thats all i was really going for

Newman, yeah i probably couldve used alot less. i can always take some out. i didnt wanna have it flap and catch a ton of air in between the lip and the bumper thats why i used so many. havent tested it out tho so ill see how it goes

Saw this in person. Looks really nice.

(thx for the material)

where did you get the material for this?

looks great
