I <3 dmv

:facepalm

youre goin to end up burning out that emoticon using it so much hahahah

You got fucked, because I JUST registered my Jeep and my cousin just registered his '99 Civic coupe and we both went at the same time and put $300 for mine and $500 for his…didn’t say shit. You either fucked up somewhere or got fucked.

or this

.

naa the dmv really is doin that now bc too many ppl go in saying they bought it for alot less and nys is getting less tax money so now they do it that way,I had to do the same thing, the only way to not pay that is if u say it was a gift

I filled out the dmv forms when I got my Mustang and said I paid $500 for it and they didnt try to fuck me over.

If the car is over 10 years old its exempt and you can put it as free/gift. I have done this several times.

my gti was taxed by Washington state at time of purchase, NYS can lick my SACK.
my toyota was a gift. for real. i do like my DRA i pay every may though. love it so much.

You got hosed, when I titled it last fall I think I bill of sale-d it for $200. They didn’t blink at Clifton Park today when I did the G20. It seems like it depends which DMV you go to, I legit paid $500 for an 8 year old Neon and the clerk at Schenectady DMV said that couldn’t be right…I left there, drove straight to Ballston Spa and got it through.

Schenectady didnt care when I told them I paid almost nothing for my '96 Neon. It had an Alabama title and the mileage on the title was more than the mileage on the car and the lady there didnt give me any trouble back in '03.

I traded a $600 truck for the car so I really didnt pay much.

if the car is 99-00+ you NEED to fill out a pink form with the seller signing how much was paid, aslong as you have the seller put down however much you want and bring the bill of sale aswell then they will accept.

its not too late, go to dmv, request the form and nys will remburst you… ask me how i iknow, i’m ging thru this right now…

Well THAT’S good information! :excited :thumbup

The money went to coke and strippers, I’m tellin’ ya.

The only bits of information here that are useful…

Fail to everyone else who thinks laws/taxes/precedures don’t ever change.
“Yea, I registered this car three years ago and said I paid $500 for it and they accepted it.”

+1

With legality in mind, nys dmv CAN charge you a fair market value tax on the vehicle at the time of registration if they feel you’re low balling them. It’s right in the fine print, and been that way for a long time. However with proper legal and signed documentation they MUST refund any discrepacy that you can prove. If I bought a wrecked CGT for $100K and fixed it up for another $80K, they cannot charge sales tax for the typical resale value of the car at $~$300K if all proper sales, vehicle purchase, and parts documentation are in order and all parts sales tax has been paid for in full already.

Go back to DMV and get the appropriate paperwork, or go to website and print it off, to get a refund issued. The state is hurting for money and they’re going to try to squeeze it out any way they can, but that doesn’t mean there are not ways to get around it or get some back.

No, see, I registered the exact same car Shady’s registering now in September or October on a $200 bill of sale, no pink sheet, no problem. Granted, with the new calendar year things may have changed legally, but a quick search turns up nothing. It seems to me an issue of selective enforcement.
