The reverse lights don’t come on until after the car hits the first rocks and the nose comes off the ground. I’m guessing it was the impact that slammed him forward and he hit the shifter. That first hit was a pretty serious impact.

it sure looked like he was on a long enough straight road where he would see it but even if he was going around a turn he would not have been going that fast and probably would have stopped in time
If you watch the video after the cop runs up they show there is a long straight before the slide.
