I should have brought a better camera....

I’ve been on a business trip for a few weeks now and found a little bit of time to see some sites. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my SLR otherwise I could have made a huge addition to my collections. More to come once I get back home:

Looking forward to it

Unfortunately my point and shoot is really poor at metering light. The spotlights in the room combined with the light coming in the windows made the majority of my photos overexposed. The other half were blurry because it would put itself into a long F* mode.

The museum itself was nice. Like nearly everything in Italy it was closed when we showed up at noon and had to wait an hour and a half for it to open up again. We walked around to some of the local shops to get lunch and found the vast majority of the Lambo workers doing the same. If I am able to go back I’m going to try to take the factory tour, i think it would be much more interesting but it requires you to book 2 weeks in advance. Unfortunately that is difficult to do when you are on business rather than vacation.

MOAR!!

What’s up with that last picture?

Are you referring to the apparent fractures through the vent holes on the carbon ceramic discs?

Meanwhile, down the street in Maranello…

The two museums are now under the same ownership allowing you to take the tour of Museo Ferrari at the factory and Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari in Modena (photos still to come). After being to all these different museums (take a look through the threads I started) my biggest complaint is that without a tour guide you would walk right by a lot of the most interesting things. This trip I was with a college (another engineer) who had been through before and my ramblings about suspension geometry, leaf springs, friction dampers, cantilever suspension, venturi tunnels, skirts, diffuses… all made a huge difference in what we looked at and how much time we spent looking at it. I would love to go back to these museums with someone who really has some real knowledge about the engineering or at least some experience with the history of the cars.

so you took only one photo of that model la ferrari?

Nope, it looks like I missed a couple from that room. All of these cars are different design iterations of the La Ferrari

Yes I was, thanx

very very cool

I’m not sure why they are there, it’s possible this is the same car/chassis that Richard Hammond took around Imola during the last season of Top Gear. I would be curious to know if the carbon ceramic brakes are more likely to fracture like that.

Great stuff man

A few shots from the museum at Enzo’s childhood home. Point and shoot died so I turned to the iPhone:

Berger’s '87 F1 Car while the history of Enzo & Ferrari plays on the walls. This car was the last Ferrari from the V6 turbo era.

An assortment of Ferrari’s, Alfas, and Maserati’s from Enzo’s racing, engineering, and constructor days. The Maserati’s body (#527) was built by Fantuzzi, a small local coach building shop in Modena.

This wire jig was used to check the fit of body panels. Obviously a long way off from “six sigma” this inspection technique is why some people claim that no two are alike. This particular jig is for the 250 GTO or “Gran Turismo Omologato” as a homologation car 100 had to be built but Ferrari only made a total of 39 skipping chassis numbers while producing them to suggest a greater number of cars in existence.

This wood buck would have been used by a coach builder to actually beat the panels into shape before inspecting them on the wire jig.

Amazing. Thanks for sharing.

SO cool…I love your threads. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome.
