I don’t know the name for them but in all reality they do server a “purpose” if you will, althou it may seem a little foolish.
On a lot of cars that don’t have the space option to do a straight back exhaust (IE my Z31) need a way to keep air flow streaming with less bends and a more direct path. The whole point of the back section being pointed up was to keep from putting to many bends in the exhaust flowpath if you were to bend it up and over to come out flush, it sounds silly but some people belive it helps (and it may on high hp cars). Up untill last year I never knew why so many people did it, but now its almost silly to see so many people with their exhausts pointing up and not know that as small/silly as it seems it is for a purpose.
And acctualy it was my friend dave who showed me about all that… The first time I brought him around the local car scene (hes from texas) he saw elliots exhaust on his MR2 and said “I see so many people around here with the back section of their exhausts pointing up at an angle like that and i bet barely any of them know what its for” so that when i decided to be the dumbshit and ask wtf it is for and he told me. It makes sense, but it’s more of a fashion thing now.
It is bent up like that because if the pipe continued to go straight, the muffler would sit 6 inches below the bumper. Apex’i and HKS do that with a lot of their exhausts. My old Apex’i on my Civic had like 3 bends total, the bend up at the end is merely for clearance and looks. Sorry if this repeats exactly what you just said :lol
to continue this here is what will be done if tougethisdb1!?! wants to give me a cost idea over the interwebs
stock exhaust
single exit
i will be looking to go from the flange the y pipe seen in the top picture above the differential back in the exact path as the bottom picture with 2.5" piping.
