I’m going to Jamacia in a month for a wedding and the bride/groom would like to show a live video to family members that can’t make it. Anybody have input on how i would be able to skype or any kind of live video transmission to the internet?
Personally, I carry sprint and have a Samsung Moment…but i don’t even know if i’ll get service there. I “assume” the resort has internet, i just don’t know about wireless.
What options do i have at this point if i want to setup a live video feed? Any suggestions?
Ustream is usually a good one if you dont have the ability to manage your router. You only upload the stream to their site too and the site sends it to all the viewers so you dont need to send a stream from your self to every user.
May not be a bad way to go. Remember cellular data rates in other countries are more expensive than the US market so comparing it to what you would pay here is not a fair estimate. Its expensive elsewhere. If your cell provider charges you something crazy that provider does prepaid and you have a GSM phone, you may be able to connect to a prepaid network and pay their daily fees instead of the per megabyte fee of your american provider.
Even if the resort has wireless I doubt that it will reach the beach. So you’re going to have to go cellular: Either tether your cell phone to a laptop with a webcam or get a cellular modem for your laptop.
Or if there is coverage where you are going, Digicell (one of Jamaica’s big carriers) has 4G wimax networks. You can buy a cellular modem for $50 and 7 days of service for $15.
I was thinking along those ad-hoc lines too. An alternative is home plug standard is good for 1000 feet. Get two home plug adapters and assuming they have a hookup in-room or somewhere, get a super long extension cord and run it from your room to the site of the wedding. Bonus part is you can even use it to plug in the laptop/webcam.
If you have a beachfront room it wouldnt be close to that, i was just being extreme. Presumably you could request the one closest to where the ceremony is going to be and it would be quite manageable for an hour or so ceremony.
