Two days ago, I took the SHO out for the first time in a month and I got it about 4 miles down the road. I pulled up to my buddies modded STI at the light and when it went green, we both accelerated slowly due to train tracks that we had to go over first… At about 3-4K RPM in first gear, I slowly rolled onto the throttle until WOT. As I started to run past him I hit 7k RPM (I shift at 8k) and I got an abrupt clunk and had no power.
The engine was still running and revving fine, but when I put it in gear, I had no power to the wheels. I pulled over and noticed a steady stream of tranny fluid. Even though I had this transmission rebuilt to handle the power, I was still nervous. I wiggled the half shaft as it looked to still be in place and it had a little play. At that point I figured I broke it.
After hooking the car up to my buddies Jeep and towing the car home, I jacked it up and here’s what I found. Keep in mind that I do NOT lauch this car and it was a rolling start.
The transmission is coming out as I want to make sure I do not have any fragments inside that could tear up my gears, blocking rings and synchros. I’ve had the car together for about 5 months with 2,000 miles on the new motor and trans and about 6k miles on the axles and then boom! In light of all this, I’m just happy that this was all that broke.
that is just it, this has not happened to anyone on the forum since 2001 (when the forum started)
people who drag or launch these cars (MTX guys only) snap these things regularly but never the way this one broke, it is always the joints. and never from rolling on the throttle.
How much shaft is still left in the tranny?
a bit over a inch, kind of sucks he has to pull the tranny to get it out.
