2nd gear: 2 hot spots visible, 2more on the flip side
close up of one of the hot spot sections … notice how localized they are, i believe this is important
other 2nd gear hot spot, again very localized
3rd gear: notice again that all the hot spots are localized, but this time the clutches are annihilated (clutches in front in the first pic, plates in the back)
notice how one clutch disk seams to have survived unscathed ???
same with one of the steel plates …
what is this part you ask ?
i don’t know, because i wasn’t there for the tear down, but it sure is plugged with trash !
the bearing side doesn’t look to pretty either
now for the inner basket that all the clutches ride on
the garbage you seat sitting in there is sheet metal scraps of some sort, melted plastic, and those rectangular metal blocks… those are supposed to be round … R-O-U-N-D … not square
what’s keeping alex from making it a stick car, again? i know ATX is better for not losing boost between gears, but man - i’d hate to have to go through this every so often
yeah, i know he’s talked about this in some old thread, but y’know…
this transmission lasted 10k, and took more abuse then any mtx for this car would
unless u get:
the $6k custom dogbox, plus clutch, and probably add in HD axles too…
the $6k gearset for the sho MTX, plus clutch, plus rebuild kit, plus the LSD, plus having it assembeled … and probably add in HD axles too…
or the other option is the one i want to do, which would require a load of fab to stick a diffferent cars stock MTX in, and then custom fit a clutch, plus the LSD, plus custom axles
the manual would end up costing more if you can believe that.
clutch and flywheel $800-1K
quafe $1300
all the goodies to make it work about $500
finding obslete syncros, blockrings, shift forks, and diminishing options for clutches. priceless $$$
it is getting very dificult to source parts for the manual… oh i forgot the most important part. that will obly hold 350 ftlbs of tq guess what? I excede that. so i can either send the gears out to be shotpiened and they will hold a bit more power but I still can’t shift hard or it will break. my only other options are to convert to 4.30 final drive gear set from shonut which is $2500, or the stock gear ratio with beafed up gears which is 4500 not including 4th and 5th or 6K for all indistructable internals. They are reliably holding 636WHP on one particular guy and he tracks his car regularly.
I want a stick believe me but it is still believed that the ATX will hold more power than the MTX when it isn’t hacked togeather. my plan for this year was to run 11’s but with a dead tranny that obviously isn’t going to happen which would put me about a full second ahead of the fastest 1/4 mile SHO in the world.
As much as I <3 SHOs drivetrains, I also dispise them for the exact same reason.
Also of note, the clutch-packs are not the only reason it failed, and bearing falling apart in the clutch basket are not the only reason it failed. However it doesn’t appear to be pictured.
ugh …the attempts at 11 second runs wont be coming as soon as we hoped
the opal frost got pillaged for parts
the parts were received from FPS
the tranny guy assembeled everything
we worked from 8pm thursday till TEN OCLOCK FRIDAY MORNING geting everything assembeled (in an atempt to make it to dunville autodrome @ 4pm)
and as we put the passanger side axle into place we realized theres over a 1/4 inch of slack in all directions betwen the CV shaft and the differential
Called the guy that rebuilt the tranny (localguy) was told its probably fine but if we dont like it we shouldnt run the car
called FPS, talked to doug, explained problem … he determines that theres a thrust bearing missing and the differential is toast …and i also think the bearing surface for the cv shaft (in the tranny) is missing, because on the rebuilt tranny that surface is definantly machined aluminium looking … no gold bearing suface to be seen …
so now literaly everything has to come back apart, as the offending parts are behind Verything in the case

We stayed up for 24+ hours straight to attempt to get this done, but in the end, the tranny just didn’t want to have it. So we went to Dunnville in the Saturn instead and ended up staying up for 41+ hours to make all the time on the SHO worth it, and I think we still had a good time. The tranny will be done soon enough and ready for Track day three if it happens.
