There are so many sports car mfgs now that don’t even offer a stick in some of their vehicles, Porsche and Lambo off the top of my head. I’m positive my next vehicle will be an automatic of some variety.
That said, there will always be a market for purists and us older farts that want the control and connection that only manual transmissions provide. They ain’t dead yet.
I honestly just don’t feel as safe driving an automatic. I feel like I usually just zone out and don’t pay attention to the road as much, while a manual basically forces me to. I’m completely uninterested in cars that don’t come with a stick.
I think at this point the only thing holding me back from switching from DSG to a manual for my next daily driver is that my girlfriend wouldn’t be able to drive me home from parties when drunk.
Clarkson is sadly accurate on this. I enjoy my GTR (arguably the best dct car without an unlimited budget) despite it being a 2 pedal, but it’s definitely a drawback and it lacks the fun factor of pretty much any manual transmission out there.
people will always want horses… BMW has been trying to kill the manual M5 for a few generations but US marketing has so much pull that they keep forcing them to offer a manual.
Oh yeah, this too. There are rare occasions when I have no choice but to let my wife behind the wheel. I still feel sorry for the poor bastard who bought that Dakota pickup I tried to teach her on.
I just sold my m5 because its appeal was daily drivable but fast. For my dd now I want something efficient, it just makes sense. Hoping to daily a Tesla S in the next 5 years or so
I’m looking for an e30m3 now, since IMO petrol cars will only be for nostalgic factor soon, don’t need the practicality of a sedan for a weekend car
The 991 911 Turbo and Turbo S no longer have manual trans, only PDK. I just tried the Porsche configurator - the checkbox next to the PDK “can not be deselected.”
At any rate they “don’t offer a stick in some of their vehicles,” yet, you can get a stick in the Cayenne six…
Its so weird. and its basically their best performing cars - probably driven by the need to have a consistent competitive nurburgring lap time or something silly.
Also configured a new 535i the other day to potentially replace my 6MT e60 535i - auto only.
100% the case. The current autos are so quick and manual sales so low (the US is one of the only prime buyers) that it’s not “worth” engineering in a stick box.
